Strong second half effort leads Lehigh past Army

2/11/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball

West Point, NY – Freshman Bryan White scored ten points and pulled down six rebounds to help Lehigh past Army by a 69-64 score at Christl Arena on Friday night.  White was one of three Mountain Hawks to finish in double figures in the win.  The victory improves Lehigh’s record to 13-10 overall and 7-3 in the Patriot League.  The setback drops Army to 3-19 overall and 1-9 in league play.

“We didn’t come with the effort and intensity we needed to for the entire 40 minutes,” said Lehigh head coach Billy Taylor after the win.  “We played well in spurts, but without a complete effort, Army is tough to beat, as they showed tonight.  I was very pleased with energy shown by Brian White tonight.  That’s what he’s been showing us lately in practice, and it translated to tonight’s game.”

In what figured to be a defensive struggle coming in, the first half began that way.  Lehigh built a 25-24 lead at the half, as both teams struggled to get shots off.

In the second half, however, the Mountain Hawks took advantage of every opportunity, and Lehigh began to sizzle from the floor.  As a team, Lehigh shot 70% in the second stanza en route to the win.

Junior Joe Knight led all Lehigh scorers with 20 points on the night.  Sophomore center Jason Mgebroff added 14 points for the Mountain Hawks, who finished the game with a 56% field goal clip – their best shooting percentage of the season.

Forward Cory Sinning led Army’s efforts with 20 points.

“Every game is a championship game, and we can’t lose focus at any time,” Taylor continued.  “Now we have another championship game to get ready for on Sunday.”

Lehigh returns to action on Sunday as the Mountain Hawks head to Worcester to take on first place Holy Cross.  Game time is set for 2:00 from the Hart Center.  The game will be televised live on College Sports Television (DirecTV channel 610), and a tape-delayed broadcast will be shown on WFMZ-TV in the Lehigh Valley later that afternoon at 4.
