Lehigh set to tangle with fourth-ranked Wildcats

11/25/2005 12:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh travels to Villanova on Sunday evening to take on the fourth-ranked Wildcats in what will be the Mountain Hawks first true road game of the season.  Villanova is the highest ranked team the Brown and White has played since going up against number-three and eventual 2004 National Champion Connecticut in Hartford on December 1, 2003.  Lehigh downed Stony Brook 58-54 last time out behind a great effort from its junior class (Olivero, Neptune, Mgebroff), as the trio combined for 39 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists.  The Wildcats also played the Seawolves in their last game, which is also their only contest of the season.  Behind 21 points from Randy Foye, Villanova won easily 78-35 on November 18 at home.

While Lehigh and Villanova haven’t squared off since 1992, it’s also been awhile since the Mountain Hawks took on a team from the “Big-5.”  You would have to go back to January 24, 2001 when the Brown and White squared off with Penn for the last time that happened.

While the numbers may not jump out, Lehigh’s bench has been solid in the early going.  The Mountain Hawks top reserves (J. Anderson, Mgebroff, Szalachowski, Page, Gourlay, P. Anderson) have averaged 65 minutes per game, contributing 14.7 points and 10.2 rebounds per outing.  Their best effort came in Lehigh’s victory over Coppin State, delivering 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Sunday’s game is set to tip-off at 7:30 from The Pavilion in Villanova, Pa.  The game will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 AM immediately following New York Giants football, as well as lehighsports.com with streaming audio provided by Yahoo! Sports.  Veteran Matt Kerr and Greg Falkenbach ’72 will provide the commentary.
