BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks battled valiantly against one of the Patriot League’s top teams on Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough as they fell to American 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Game scores were 31-29, 20-30, 30-26 and 30-22 as Lehigh won a game from the four-time defending league champions and came close in two others, but ultimately fell to 6-19, 0-11 in the Patriot League. American improves to 20-8, 11-1 in league matches.

Lehigh battled point for point versus the Eagles in game one. The Mountain Hawks would drop the opening game by the slimmest of margins, but rebounded to dominate game two. Lehigh hit .394 in game two and dominated the game throughout as the Mountain Hawks evened the game at one.

In game three, Lehigh battled hard and continued to hit well, recording a .353 percentage, but American was able to build a small lead and hold on to go up 2-1. In game four the Mountain Hawks started strong, but the strain of two games in two games against tough opponents began to wear on them, and the Eagles built a little distance in the final game for the hard earned victory.

“Despite the result, this was one of the best matches this team played all year,” noted head coach Amanda Moran afterwards. We came into the match with a game plan and we ran the plan perfectly, unfortunately a couple tough calls at the wrong time hurt our momentum.”

The Mountain Hawks had four players record double digit kills on the afternoon, led by Michelle Schwendenmann who had 19 kills. Shannon Spafford added 12 kills while Nikky Barnes and Julia Atkins registered ten apiece. The Mountain Hawks hit .237 for the match, which was one-hundredth of a point better than the Eagles. Cassidy Maumus tallied 12 digs defensively, while Barnes added 11 to record the double-double.

American also placed four players in double digit kills, led by Elizabeth Maloney’s 14.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the court on Wednesday when they welcome Loyola to Grace Hall. The match gets underway at 7:00 and will be broadcast online at lehighsports.com with streaming provided by Yahoo! Sports.
