The Mountain Hawks came out gunning, and Lehigh ran out to a 6-0 lead to start the contest. Sophomore center Jason Mgebroff was strong early, scoring 8 of Lehigh’s first 14 points as the Mountain Hawks built a 14-11 advantage with just under eight minutes to go in the half.
The Blackbirds responded, however, and went on a 23-10 run to close out the half and take a 34-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, LIU continued its strong play, while Lehigh struggled from the field and at the line. The Blackbirds built an 18-point second half advantage, and hung on for the ten point win.
For the game, sophomore Jose Olivero led Lehigh’s scoring efforts with 14 points. Mgebroff added 12. However, as a team, the Mountain Hawks connected on just 36% of their field goal attempts on the night. More troubling, perhaps, is Lehigh’s struggles from the charity stripe. The Brown and White made just 11-of-24 free throw attempts (46%) in the game.
The Blackbirds were led by the play of Aubin Scott, who scored 13 points and pulled down 11 boards in the win. James Williams also scored 13, and Esa Maki-Tulokas added 11 points and ten rebounds to LIU’s efforts. The Blackbirds converted on 51% of their field goal attempts in the game.
Lehigh will come home to Stabler Arena for its home opener on Wednesday night, as the defending Patriot League champs play host to Sacred Heart. Tip-off is set for 7:00, and tickets are available by calling (610) 7LU-GAME, or by logging on to lehighsports.com.
