Lehigh downs Navy in league opener

Annapolis, MD – Lehigh opened Patriot League play with a 75-72 come-from-behind win at Navy. The victory improves Lehigh’s record to 4-8 overall (1-0 Patriot League), while Navy falls to 10-4 (0-1 PL). The win gave Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan her 100th career coaching victory. At halftime, the Mountain Hawks took a 36-35 lead to the locker room. Anne Tierney led all scorers in the first half with 17 points. Tierney went 5-of-9 from the floor, including 1-of-2 from three point land, and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. The senior also tallied seven rebounds. Also for Lehigh, freshman Dawn Gorynski managed six points on two three pointers. As a team, the Mountain Hawks shot 46% from the floor and 61% from the free throw line. For Navy, Courtney Davidson notched 12 points on a 5-of-10 shooting performance. Davidson was also one of the team leaders in first half rebounds with six. The Midshipmen managed a 42% mark from the floor, going 14-of-33 as a team. In the second half, Navy came out on a 9-0 run, to take a 44-36 lead at the 18:11 mark. Lehigh’s first second half basket came at the 17:22 mark when Gorynski netted her third three pointer of the contest. The Mountain Hawks would trail the Midshipmen until the 2:30 mark of the second half when Carli Toliver knocked down her third three point shot of the half, tying the score at 69-69. Tierney sank a jumper at the 1:30 mark, giving Lehigh a 71-69 lead. With 11 seconds remaining, Jana Ransom sank a lay-up and was fouled by Lisa Steinmetz. Ransom missed the free throw, giving Navy one last chance, trailing by three with four seconds remaining. At the buzzer Navy’s Davidson’s desperation three point attempt fell short, giving Lehigh a three point win. Tierney led all players with 28 points and 11 rebounds. Ransom and Gorynski posted double figures with 13 and 11 points respectively. Gorynski also managed six assists, while Jessica DePalo led the Mountain Hawks with two blocks. Lehigh shot 48% from the floor, and out-rebounded Navy 41-32. "I’m excited about the way we came ready to play today," said Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan after the win. "This is a big road win and a big confidence boost for our team." The Mountain Hawks return to action on Wednesday, when Lehigh visits Bucknell in the opening of the new Sojka Pavilion.
