Bethlehem, PA – The Mountain Hawks made it close at the end, but their comeback attempts were not enough as they fell Monday night 67-60 to visiting Columbia. The Mountain Hawks trailed by as many as 15 in the first half, but were able to get within five in the final minute before time ran out on them.
“It’s disappointing,” said head coach Sue Troyan. “We had a real good run there for about 10 minutes in the second half to get back into it, but we have got to learn to play with that intensity and emotion for the whole game. I think it was a good learning experience for them, to show them just how hard they have to work to get that consistency down. It’s a tough loss though, especially at home. These are the games we need to win.”
Jessica DePalo led the team on the night with 16 points and 8 rebounds, while Jenny Callan chipped in with 10 off the bench. Freshman Adrienne Blount tallied six points and eight boards, including 5 on the offensive side, all career highs. For Columbia (5-3), Sue Altman and Edytte Key had twelve apiece to lead them. Altman also had a game-high nine rebounds.
The Mountain Hawks (1-6) will take off for the rest of the semester for finals, and will return to the court December 20, when they travel to New York to take on Binghamton. Tip-off is set for 1:00, and the game will be broadcast live on WLVR-FM and on Lehigh’s website at www.lehighsports.com.
