The epitome of a student-athlete is Stuart Early, a Rhodes Scholar recipient and engineering-math major. In the engineering mechanics curriculum, with a minor in mathematics, Early ranked second in his engineering class. He was the recipient of numerous academic awards during his years on campus, including the junior alumni prize in engineering.
Early was a Dean's List student every semester, treasurer of the student governing body and still found time for varsity and intramural athletics.
He closed his swimming career with 138 points, and was an outstanding freestyler for coach Bill Christian on the Engineer's swim teams. He was captain of the 1965-66 swim team and was also captain of the Lehigh freshman team. In high school, Early was an interscholastic All-American and Pennsylvania state champion.
Born in Rockford Illinois, Early went on to be a manager with the Amoco Oil Company.
