Following in the footsteps of the legendary Billy Sheridan would be a difficult task for anyone, but Gerry Leeman did so in a very impressive way. A member of the National Collegiate Wrestling Hall of Fame, Leeman was the personal choice of Billy Sheridan to succeed him as Lehigh coach.18827

He directed Engineer squads to 18 winning seasons in 18 years (1953 through 1970) and a 161-38-4 record. Lehigh won six EIWA team championships while Leeman was coach, he coached six men who won a total of nine NCAA titles and 22 wrestlers who piled up 36 EIWA crowns. Leeman was also the coach of the 1961-62 team which recorded Lehigh’s all-time finest record of 12-0-0.

Lehman himself was an excellent athlete as he was a national AAU champion in 1940, NCAA champion and “Outstanding Wrestler of the Meet” in 1948 and an Olympic silver medalist in the London Olympics of 1948.

Leeman received his B.A. degree from Northern Iowa in 1948, and after coming to Lehigh, coached five different sports over 34 years. He never had a losing record.
