BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's and women's track and field teams have combined to win seven weekly awards for the first two weeks of competition in December, the Patriot League announced retroactively on Friday.
Lehigh athletes took home three major awards from their first weekend of competition at the Lehigh Season Opener on December 2, with senior Lucas Warning earning the Patriot League Male Field Athlete of the Week, senior Courtney Avery being named the Female Field Athlete of the Week and freshman Joey Kelly being honored as the Male Rookie of the Week.
For the team's second week of competition on Dec. 9-10 at the Fast Times Before Finals, Lehigh swept the four awards that were issued for the week, with junior Trevor Knowles being named the Male Field Athlete of the Week, and Kelly earning his second straight Rookie of the Week honor. On the women's side, Avery took home her second Field Athlete of the Week honor and freshman Brooke Schaeffer earned the first Rookie of the Week honor of her career.
WEEK ONE
At the Season Opener, Warning shattered his own school record to win the shot put with a heave that traveled 17.93 meters; 31 centimeters further than his previous school record and 1.55m further than the second place finisher. Warning now holds the four furthest indoor shot puts in Lehigh program history and the mark currently ranks him sixth in the nation so far this season.
Competing for the first time since the NCAA Outdoor Championships last June, Avery cleared the bar at 1.75 meters in the high jump to finish first of 28 competitors at the Lehigh Season Opener. Her leap is tied for 10th in the nation and is just behind her Lehigh program record of 1.82m.
Kelly finished third out of 20 competitors in the pole vault at the Lehigh Season Opener. His 4.55m vault was the highest-placing of four Patriot League pole vaulters in the event.
WEEK TWO
One week later at the Fast Times Before Finals, Knowles broke his own school record in the heptathlon, beating his previous mark by 18 points. He earned first places performances in the pole vault (4.60m) and shot put (13.44m), and second places finishes in the 60m dash (7.26), long jump (6.46m), 60m hurdles (8.57) and 1,000 run (2:47.57). His score ranks ninth in the nation in the heptathlon this season.
