BETHLEHEM, Pa. A goal in each half for Rutgers men's soccer proved to be the difference as Lehigh was bested 2-0 Monday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks dropped to 1-2-1 on the season while the Scarlet Knights improved to 3-1.Â
"It was disappointing," said head coach Dean Koski. "We did all we could to create chances, but we only had a couple of shots on goal, and that's not good when you're up a man. We lacked a lot of discipline tonight in terms of execution. Even if you're man up when you're playing a Big Ten team, if you don't do your job and do it well, you're going to get punished, and we did on the counterattack that put the game out of reach for us."
Ian Abbey found an open Curt Calov in the opening minutes of the game to take an early 1-0 lead. While Rutgers had the momentum early on due to a goal, the Mountain Hawks controlled momentum for the later half of the game after Amar Adalsteinsson was given a red card in the 30th minute for denying a goal scoring opportunity, which forced the Scarlet Knights to play with 10 men for the last 60 minutes of the game.Â
The Scarlet Knights held a 1-0 lead for the majority of the game until Bryan Keating doubled their lead in the 89th minute as he grabbed the rebound and put it in for a goal after Lehigh senior goalkeeper Blake Koski originally denied Dylan Carlson. Carlson was given an assist for Keating's goal.Â
Koski finished with three saves, while Ciaran Dalton did not make any saves for the Scarlet Knights, as their lone saves were team saves.
Yusef Gueye gave the Mountain Hawks two of their best chances all night and both ended in a team save for Rutgers. In the 61st minute, Gueye headed the ball right on target, but Rutgers had three defenders there for the goal-line clearance. In the 85th minute, Gueye put another shot on goal that hit a Rutgers defender in the face.
Lehigh held a 15-7 advantage in shots and a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Gueye led the way with a team-high three shots.Â
The Mountain Hawks will look to bounce back when they play at Sacred Heart on Friday at 6 p.m. Friday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.Â
