Mann Surpasses 1,000 Career Point Mark as Lehigh Falls at Bucknell

2/8/2017 9:25:00 PM | Women's Basketball

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lehigh junior Quinci Mann became the 19th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career on Wednesday night, but the Lehigh women's basketball team came out on the short end of a 73-54 decision at Bucknell. Mann led the way for the Mountain Hawks, tying for a game-high 16 points while shooting 5-of-14 from the field. Senior Kayla Burton tied a season-high with 12 points on 3-of-5 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Junior Hailey Pascoe added six points while shooting 3-of-6 on the night. Bucknell (18-5, 10-2 PL) extended their home court winning streak to 22 games and shot 43.6 percent on the night, including 44 percent from three-point land. Lehigh (7-16, 2-10 PL) struggled at both ends of the floor, going 19-for-60 (31.7 percent) and getting outrebounded 40-29. The Mountain Hawks did hold an edge in turnovers and outscored Bucknell 15-9 that that category.

"It was a night where we really struggled to put the ball in the basket," said head coach Sue Troyan. "Bucknell came out and made a statement in the first 10 minutes and made it really tough to run our offense and get any clean looks. We struggled to get stops in the first half and didn't play well on the defensive end."

The Bison jumped out to a 23-8 lead after one quarter of play, shooting 61.5 percent and 4-of-6 from three-point range. Bucknell's defense also held the Mountain Hawks to just 3-of-15 from the field and 1-of-8 from three-point land.

Mae Williams got Lehigh on the board with a layup and Camryn Buhr added a free throw moments later to knot the score at 3-3. After five straight from Bucknell, Mann scored her first points of the game off a jumper, before Kyi English responded with five straight of her own to up the Bucknell lead to 11-5. Hannah Hedstrom drained a three from the corner at the 4:33 mark to get Lehigh back within three at 11-8, but the Bison closed the period strong, rattling off 12 unanswered points to end the quarter and carry a 23-8 lead into the second.

Burton opened the second quarter with a triple on Lehigh's first possession to break the Bucknell run, and Mann added two more following her own offensive board to make it a 10-point game at 23-13. The momentum was short lived though, as Bucknell once again had an answer with a 10-0 run as the Mountain Hawks went silent on the offensive end for the next four minutes. A layup by Hedstrom at the 4:42 mark ended the run and Mann added a jumper just over two minutes later to get Lehigh within 33-17. Claire DeBoer answered with a layup for Bucknell and Mann then hit two from the charity stripe to make it a 35-19 game. DeBoer added three more points before the end of the half for Bucknell with a free throw and layup over the final 1:11 to make it a 38-19 game at the break.

"They shot the ball really well from three tonight and we didn't go a good job keeping them off the boards," Troyan said. "I thought our defensive effort was really lacking and we missed a lot of layups around the basket. Bucknell has size and we tried to take advantage by doing a bit more on the perimeter, but I think we settled a little too much for three-point shots, especially in the first half."

Sitting at 997 career points, Mann hit two free throws in the opening seconds of the third quarter as Bucknell ran off 11 of the first 15 points of the half to take a 49-23 lead by the midway point. At the 4:59 mark, Mann drove to her left towards the lane and hit a pull up jumper from the foul line, and drew a foul in the process to put her over 1,000 for her career. She completed the three-point play to make it a 49-25 ballgame following the media timeout.

"Congratulations to Quinci," Troyan said. "Well deserved. She's had to work for every point this year and it's a great individual accomplishment for her."

Lehigh got the game to as close as 22 at 53-31 before the end of the quarter following a layup from Bernadette Devaney and a three by Mann at 3:47. The Bison once again were able to create separation by running off 12 of the period's final 16 points to take a 64-35 lead into the fourth, outscoring Lehigh 26-16 in the period.

Pascoe and Rachel Dumiak answered each other's baskets to start the final quarter, which gave Bucknell its largest lead of the night at 30 points. Lehigh hit a string of three straight baskets heading into the final media timeout with a three-pointer and layup by Gena Grundhoffer, and a baseline jumper by Eripret to make it 70-44 with 4:47 to go. Burton used a pair of triples and two free throws to score eight of her 12 points over the final 3:16, and Paige Galiani put in a layup to help Lehigh turn in its best quarter of the night, outscoring Bucknell 19-9 in the final frame.

"Kayla closed the gap there when the game could have easily gotten away from us," Troyan said. "I thought the kids who came in and got an opportunity to get some extended minutes really played well."

Lehigh returns to Stabler Arena on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. to take on Holy Cross in their Play4Kay Game.
