BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With the official start of preseason practice just over two weeks away, Lehigh head women's basketball coach Sue Troyan has unveiled the Mountain Hawks' schedule for the upcoming 2016-17 season. The schedule features 29 games, including 16 home games at Stabler Arena, and 11 non-league contests. Lehigh will face two teams that competed in last year's NCAA Tournament and three that made appearances in the WNIT.
Lehigh will open up the season at home for the second straight year on Friday, Nov. 11 against East Stroudsburg before heading out on the road to battle Duquesne (Nov. 13), who competed in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament last season as a No. 9 seed.
Lehigh will hold its seventh annual Education Day on Wednesday, Nov. 16 as they welcome Delaware State to Stabler Arena, an event that has attracted over 7,700 fans the past two years.
"Our Education Day game may be the highlight game of our non-conference schedule as it allows our players to compete in front of a packed house in Stabler Arena," Troyan said. "Our marketing and promotions team has done a wonderful job of making this an 'event' for not only our players, but more importantly for the thousands of elementary and middle school children from our local community who attend the game each year."
The Mountains Hawks will follow that up with a home tilt on Saturday, Nov. 19 against Sacred Heart, before traveling to Mount St. Mary's on Nov. 22. Thanksgiving Weekend will once again bring the Christmas City Classic to Stabler, with the two-day tournament featuring Monmouth, Hartford and Norfolk State.
After closing out November against NJIT on the 30th, Lehigh will travel to in-state foe Villanova on Dec. 5, who competed in the second round of the WNIT last season.
"The opportunity to play both Duquesne and Villanova on the road early in the season presents another great opportunity to measure up where we stand against quality opponents who competed in the post-season last year," Troyan said.
The non-league slate rounds out with a home matchup with Rider on Dec. 8 and a trip to Berkeley, Calif. on Dec. 11 to face Pac-12 opponent Cal, representing the lone matchup with a power five conference opponent this season.
"One of our scheduling priorities every year is to play a team out of the power five conferences to measure up where we stand," Troyan said. "It's a great opportunity to play against elite competition and evaluate where we are as a program and a league. This game also fits well with our scheduling and recruiting philosophies of making sure we schedule a game close to home for our out of region players. This will be a 'home game' for both Hailey (Pascoe) and Quinci (Mann) who both live near the Bay Area."
With seven for the team's 11 non-league games taking place at home, and nine of the first 13 overall, Troyan thinks the large number of home games early in the year can help the team get out on the right foot.
"We have a very young team this year with seven players who did not play last year," Troyan said. "Home games early in the season in front of our home crowd should help provide steadiness and stability to our group as they gain their confidence through the pre-season portion of our schedule."
Following a 19-day layoff for final exams and the holidays, the Mountain Hawks begin the 18-game league schedule on Dec. 30 with the Patriot League opener against reigning Patriot League champion, Army West Point. After ringing in the new year with Boston University on Jan. 2, Lehigh travels to the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. metro area for matchups at Loyola (Jan. 5) and American (Jan. 7), before returning home Jan. 11 against 2016 co-regular season PL champ, Bucknell.
"We expect the Patriot League to be as competitive as ever," said Troyan. "There were a lot of very mature teams in the league last year who graduated a lot of significant talent from their teams (including Lehigh who graduated five significant contributors). The league will be a very different mix of players which should make things even more competitive and more exciting."
The remaining home schedule will see the Mountain Hawks take on Navy (Jan. 18), Loyola (Feb. 1), American (Feb. 4), Holy Cross (Feb. 11), Lafayette (Feb. 18) and the home finale with Colgate on March 1.
The Patriot League Tournament will take place from March 4-12. The first round and quarterfinal matchups will be hosted by the higher seeds, while the semifinals and championship game will both be hosted by the highest remaining seed.
The Brown and White will look to build on an 18-13 campaign from a season ago, where they accumulated a 10-8 mark in Patriot League play and earned the fourth seed in the league tournament. Lehigh captured a 16-point win over Holy Cross in the tournament's opening round, before falling at top seeded Army in the semifinals.
All Lehigh home games will be streamed for free live on the Patriot League Network. In addition, all away league games will also be broadcast through the network.
All games and times are subject to change. Check back to Lehighsports.com for updates heading into the 2016-17 season, including ticket information. Tickets are expected to go on sale by the end of September.
