Lehigh Athletics celebrates 2017-18 school year at annual convocation

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh Athletics celebrated the 2017-18 school year with its annual Student-Athlete Awards Convocation on Monday, May 7 at Baker Hall inside the Zoellner Arts Center. The event allowed the entire athletics department to look back to the individual and team accomplishments, and honors, from this past school year. The Convocation included a highlight video, the announcement of Lehigh's department award winners and more.
 
Senior Pat Reilly of men's cross country/track and field received the department's highest honor – the Graduating Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Reilly owns a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA as a political science and physics major. He is a three-time Academic All-Patriot League selection while excelling on the cross country course as well. Reilly was an NCAA qualifier in cross country this past fall, and is a two-time All-Patriot League selection.
 
The Karen A. Adams Graduating Female Athlete Award was presented to Meghan Thompson of women's swimming and diving. Thompson is a two-time Patriot League Champion and also a relay champion. Thompson is a two-time All-League honoree, and owns a number of school and Jacobs Pool records.
 
The Graduating Male Athlete Award went to Darian Cruz of wrestling, a three-time EIWA Champion, three-time All-American and 2017 National Champion at 125 pounds. Cruz finishes his career with 120 victories, good for second in school history.
 
The John Steckbeck Award, presented to the top first-year female student-athlete, went to Megan Fennell of women's swimming and diving. Fennell won the one-meter Patriot League Championship this year, earning first team All-League honors. She also broke school records in both the one-meter and three-meter dives this season.
 
The J. Daniel Nolan Award, presented to the top first-year male student-athlete, went presented to Teddy Leggett of men's lacrosse. Leggett was a second team All-Patriot League honoree this season, finishing with 61 groundballs (second on the team) and 20 caused turnovers (third).  
Julianna Malachin of women's rowing received the Mary O'Hurley Leadership Award, given to the department's top graduating female leader. A CRCA first team All-Region honoree last season, Malachin is a two-time team captain who also garnered second team All-Patriot League recognition last season. Malachin helped lead Lehigh to its highest point total at last year's Patriot League Championship, with this year's championship set for this Friday.
 
The John A. Cable Award, presented to the department's outstanding graduating male leader, went to Zach Duffy of football. A two-time team captain, Duffy helped lead the Mountain Hawks to back-to-back Patriot League Championships the past two seasons. He is a three-time All-League selection, garnering All-ECAC twice. Duffy was recently invited to the Indianapolis Colts rookie mini camp.
 
The department's top service award, the Marlene "Linny" Fowler Service Award went to Buck Schwab of baseball. A chemical engineering major, Schwab has been a Student-Athlete Council Co-Captain and was named a Lehigh University Dean Scholar. A Leadership Academy graduate and member of the baseball team's Leadership Council, Schwab won a Patriot League Championship with the Mountain Hawks in 2015.
 
Senior Alexis Arancio of the field hockey team won the department's Sportsmanship Award. Arancio was the team's Coaches Award winner in 2017, overcoming injury to step in and help in whatever role the team needed, including serving as backup goalkeeper when the team needed it most.
 
In addition, 11 student-athletes were recipients of the Distinguished Achievement Award. These recipients are senior student-athletes who have displayed a high level of scholarship, significant athletic achievement at the league level (and beyond) and demonstrated service to the institution. Winners included Christina Auyeung of women's tennis, Julianne D'Orazio of women's lacrosse, Trevor Knowles of track and field, Jimmy Mitchell of football, Reilly of men's cross country/track and field, Alyssa Riporti of women's soccer, Thompson of women's swimming and diving, Doyle Tuvesson of men's soccer, Kierstyn Voiro of women's lacrosse, Carolyn Wright of softball and Nicole Yozzo of softball.

Junior football manager Garrett Rosenboom was honored with the Phillip J. Sclar Award, which recognizes an underclass student worker or manager who exemplifies the spirit and character of the late Phil Sclar.
