BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The awards keep coming in for Lehigh men's lacrosse junior Craig Chick, who on Thursday earned his second All-America recognition, being named a USILA (United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse) honorable mention All-American. The nation's active career leader in caused turnovers, Chick becomes Lehigh's first USILA All-American since Dan Taylor in 2015. Last week, Chick was named a second team Inside Lacrosse Media All-American, becoming the first Lehigh player named a first or second team All-American in at least the last 87 years.
Â
Through three years at Lehigh, Chick's resume is quite impressive. In 2018, Chick broke his own Lehigh single-season record for caused turnovers (41) while breaking both the Lehigh and Patriot League career marks as well. His 118 career caused turnovers is good for eighth in NCAA history. Chick will enter his senior season needing 40 to tie and 41 to break the NCAA All-Time record of 158 held by Detroit's Jordan Houtby. Chick added 50 groundballs in 2018, his third straight season with 50 or more GBs.
Chick wrapped up the season by posting 13 groundballs and six caused turnovers in the Patriot League Tournament to earn All-Tournament Team recognition, helping lead the Mountain Hawks to the Patriot League Championship Game for the first time since 2014. Chick had three groundballs and three caused turnovers in a thrilling overtime win against No. 11/13 Navy in the semifinals. He added five groundballs and two caused turnovers in the title game vs. No. 6/8 Loyola to reach 41 on the season, breaking his previous record of 40 set as a sophomore.
The Edgewater, Md. native was named first team All-Patriot League for a second straight season, earning second team All-ECAC and garnering Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Mar. 12 following Lehigh's 9-7 win at No. 12 Army West Point. Chick posted seven groundballs and three caused turnovers against the Black Knights while holding them to a then-season low seven goals. An anchor of Lehigh's defense which was ranked as high as sixth nationally, Chick broke the Lehigh career caused turnover record on Mar. 20 at No. 18/19 Hofstra and broke the league mark two games later at Boston University. Chick had at least one caused turnover in every game this season, including multiple in 12-of-17 contests.
Â
Chick is tied for the NCAA record for caused turnovers in a game (eight at Princeton as a freshman), led the nation in caused turnovers during his freshman year (37), broke the Lehigh single-season record as a sophomore (40) and did one better as a junior (41). Chick added three goals and an assist this season to increase his career totals to six goals and 10 assists.
Â
The Mountain Hawks finished the season with a 10-7 record, advancing to the Patriot League Championship Game for the fourth time in the last seven years and first time since 2014. Lehigh picked up a 10-9 overtime win over No. 11/13 Navy in the Patriot League Semifinals before standing tied 5-5 at halftime against No. 6/8 Loyola in the title game. The Mountain Hawks return a strong core of talent in 2018, highlighted by the current junior class which features Lehigh's top three scorers in Andrew Pettit, Lucas Spence and Tristan Rai who combined for 172 points this season (104 goals, 68 assists). Chick, junior Eddie Bouhall and freshman Teddy Leggett are among Lehigh's returnees defensively after combining for 85 caused turnovers this season, most in the nation among three teammates. Sophomore Conor Gaffney, a 2018 first team All-Patriot League honoree, returns in the faceoff circle while James Spence returns in goal after tallying a 9.08 goals against average and 0.498 save percentage during his freshman campaign.
