BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head women's lacrosse coach Jill Redfern announced the Mountain Hawks' 2018 team awards on Friday as the program wrapped up another successful season, which included hosting (and winning) a Patriot League Quarterfinal contest for a third straight season. After winning 12 or more games five times in the program's first 31 years, the Mountain Hawks have reached the 12-win plateau in three consecutive seasons.
Â
Lehigh's Athlete of the Year was presented to sophomore Sondra Dickey, who led the team in goals (54) and points (76) while standing among the team leaders in groundballs (34), caused turnovers (19) and draw controls (81). Dickey was one of two Mountain Hawks (along with Kayleen Kelly) to shatter the previous school record for draw controls (47) set by Carli Sukonik in 2012. Dickey was named first team All-Patriot League, second team IWLCA All-Region and second team All-ECAC. She earned Patriot League Midfielder of the Week four times this season, tied for the most in the league. Among her many highlight moments was scoring the game-winning goal with 12 seconds remaining at Columbia while tallying a career-high eight points and career-high seven draw controls at Holy Cross.
Â
Senior Kayleen Kelly was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year after impressing both on and off the field. Named to the Academic All-Patriot League team for a second straight season, Kelly owns a 3.88 grade point average as an Industrial and Systems Engineering major, which includes three perfect 4.0 terms. Kelly excelled on the field as well in 2018, earning second team All-League recognition, her first-career All-Patriot League honor. Kelly broke three Lehigh draw control records in 2018 – draws in a game (10 vs. Bucknell), season (86) and career (169). Along with a team-leading 86 draws and 49 groundballs, Kelly finished second on the Mountain Hawks with 24 caused turnovers. Kelly enjoyed a Senior Day to remember, recording three groundballs, four caused turnovers and a school-record 10 draw controls vs. Bucknell.
Â
Junior Mary Ellen Carron received the Coaches Award, presented to the individual who made significant contributions to the well-being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement or special leadership. Carron played in a variety of places in 2018, including starting at attack in the season opener vs. St. Bonaventure. Entering the day with zero career goals, she finished with four for the game. Carron made a significant impact wherever she played, starting all 19 games and finishing with 15 goals, four assists, 17 groundballs and nine caused turnovers. Carron tallied three goals and an assist vs. Holy Cross in the Patriot League Quarterfinals then added a goal and assist vs. Navy in the semifinals to earn a spot on the All-Tournament team.
Â
The Mountain Hawks overcame adversity in 2018, which included three season-ending injuries. Despite the hardships, Lehigh still finished with a school-record seven Patriot League victories. Out of Lehigh's six defeats, five came against nationally-ranked opponents and the sixth (Wagner) came vs. a team that went on to win its conference. The Mountain Hawks also competed against some of the nation's best teams. Lehigh fell to No. 12 Penn State by just one goal (14-13) while overcoming a slow start to pull within 13-10 then 14-11 of No. 14 Princeton with more than 12 minutes still remaining.
Â
"The resilience our team displayed this season was remarkable," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "Winning consistently at any level is very difficult. We are proud of the strides our program has made."
Â
The Mountain Hawks finished the year 13-1 against unranked opponents and 12-0 vs. teams who advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Lehigh defeated eventual MAAC Champion, and NCAA Tournament qualifier, Fairfield in its third game away from home in the span of six days. A season that could have gone in many different directions ended with 13 victories, tied for the second most wins in program history and just one of tying the league record.
Â
Lehigh is now 38-17 over the last three seasons, by far its most wins in program history over a three-year stretch (the previous high was 35).
Â
"The consistency of our staff and in our player development is at the heart of our success," said Redfern. "We are optimistic about our future and already looking forward to August."
