Schedule/Results
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Sophomore Ashleigh Crawford and freshman Brittany Curtin both broke school records on Thursday to open up Lehigh's competition at the 2018 Penn Relays. Crawford broke the oldest women's outdoor record on the books in the 3,000m run, and Curtin broke her own school record from earlier this month in the discus.
Crawford completed her 3K in 9:41.30 to finish 14th overall out of 26 runners. The time broke the Mountain Hawks program record of 9:49.45, set by Ellen Cogswell in 1997. It had been the oldest women's outdoor school record remaining, and one of only two that remained from the 20th century (pre 2000). The mark broke Crawford's previous personal record (9:53.54) by a margin of 12.24 seconds. Crawford is coming off a big meet last weekend that saw her run the fastest 3K steeplechase time in the Patriot League this season, a performance that earned her PL Track Athlete of the Week.
Maura Henderson also raced in the 3K on Thursday and placed 19th in 9:58.10.
Earlier in the day, Curtin and Amanda Youngblood got the relays started with Curtin breaking her own school record in the discus at 48.63m, surpassing her previous benchmark of 47.88m from the Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet on April 8. The mark also strengthened her grip on the top discus throw in the Patriot League this season. Curtin placed sixth overall in the event out of 28, while Youngblood threw 39.66m.
Curtin and Youngblood also returned for the shot put on Thursday afternoon, with Curtin taking 22nd place out of 52 at 13.24m and Youngblood throwing 12.47m to place 30th.
Paige Grossman led Lehigh in 17th place in the hammer throw with a toss of 50.10m. Maggie Tarmey followed with her top throw of 45.61m. In the vault, Kaitlyn Toman and Madisyn Hawkins both cleared 3.50m.
Over on the track on Thursday morning, junior Noreen Byrne raced to a 24th place finish out of 49 in the 400m hurdles with a new PR of 1:02.22, beating out her previous best mark of 1:02.55. In the high jump, junior Tyler Bannister led Lehigh by tying for 14th in the high jump after clearing 1.63m. Jordan Otto cleared 1.59m to tie for 18th overall, while junior Olivia Reinold also cleared 1.59m.
On Thursday afternoon, the 4x100 relay team of Liyala Dickens, Iman Mosley, Brett DeWeese and Morgan McConnell placed 54th in 49.82. The 4x400 team of Noreen Byrne, McConnell, Alexis Smith and Hanna Brosky placed 48th (3:57.76), and the distance medley relay team ran to a 10th place finish (12:03.32) with Sophie Antonioli, Kristen Lavallee, Mary Casey and Hannah Bonaguidi.
On the men's side, Victor Yegon set a new personal record of 9:23.63 in the 3,000m steeplechase, besting his old mark by less than one second, which ranks eighth in the PL this season. Seniors John Tolbert and Patrick Reilly raced in the 5K, with Tolbert smashing his personal record by nearly 38 seconds with his time of 14:38.60, which placed him 54th out of 91, and Reilly turned in a finish of 15:17.03.
The Mountain Hawks will continue their competition at the Penn Relays on Friday in eight different events.
