BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh football team will wrap up its spring practice segment with the annual Brown and White Game Saturday at Goodman Stadium. The Mountain Hawks will take to their home field for the first time since defeating Lafayette in the 153rd edition of The Rivalry to claim their 12th Patriot League title. Admission is free for the event, which begins at 11 a.m.

The Brown and White Game will serve as the 15th and final of Lehigh's allotted practice sessions this spring. The Mountain Hawks held practice No. 13 Tuesday evening and will hold No. 14 Friday afternoon. The weather over the last month has been both unpredictable and unfitting of "spring" with the combination of cold temperatures, wind, rain and even some April snow altering much of Lehigh's practice schedule and forcing the Mountain Hawks off of the Whitehead Practice Fields and on to Frank Banko Field at the Ulrich Sports Complex for all but one of their first 13 spring workouts; but head coach Andy Coen credits the Mountain Hawks for keeping their focus, while producing positive results throughout the spring segment.

"We've performed pretty well through our spring practices," Coen said. "I've seen a lot of improvement in many of our guys. Our kids have been working hard at it every day. Nobody has complained about the weather. They've done a really good job keeping focus, which isn't easy to do. As we wind down here, this has been a pretty positive spring."

Lehigh has saved most of its live, or semi-live scrimmage periods for the last two Saturdays. Coen has been pleased with the give-and-take between the Mountain Hawks' offense, which is looking to maintain the high level of performance established in recent years, and Lehigh's improving defense.

"Our guys have competed well against each other," he explained. "Over the last few years the offense at times had been dominant and the defense was struggling, but in one of our scrimmages this spring, the defense played lights out. The approach we're taking on defense has been a positive thing. The energy that (new linebackers) Coach Kashurba brings, the kids have taken to it."

Offensively, Coen has been pleased with the emergence of the outside receivers as Lehigh works to replace the dynamic pairing of Troy Pelletier and Gatlin Casey. Rising senior Conner Bianchini and junior Devon Bibbens have impressed with increased reps in the spring along with sophomore Matt Jordan.

"Devon Bibbens has been the most improved player among the receivers," Coen said. "He's strong and has now started to understand coverages. He has really improved and developed into a solid FCS receiver, which is a real positive. There will be a lot of competition in the fall. We're bringing in a good group of wide receivers. Guys that we think are very talented. Those guys will get a great opportunity as we move forward."

Senior tight end Dan Scassera appears to be ready for an increased role and Lehigh's offensive line has made strides despite the departure of three all-league seniors.

In the backup quarterback competition, junior Tyler Monaco has impressed with his grasp of the offense and ability to throw the ball, while sophomore Addison Shoup has displayed the most mobility of the three signal-callers working this spring.

"Monaco has stepped up as the backup guy," Coen said. "He has done some really good things. He can throw the ball and run the offense. He's capable of running but he had the knee issue last year. Addison is a little more mobile and has been solid as well."

With the addition of Matt Ford to coach Lehigh's tight ends, Coen has enjoyed an opportunity to take a full view of the Mountain Hawks in the spring. He has spent more time with the defense in the spring. Lehigh has implemented some new blitz schemes, which the players have taken to. The linebacking corps, led by senior Mark Walker, junior Keith Woetzel and sophomores Pete Haffner and Nate Norris, has performed especially well throughout the spring.

"Defensively, we've done a better job of stopping the run game," Coen said. "Last year wasn't good, but we've done a much better job this spring. Our like our blitz packages a lot. They have given our offense issues. Our linebackers have really improved. Those guys can be active and make plays with blitzes and those types of things."

Saturday's Brown and White Game, which will once again match the offense against the defense under a modified scoring system, will afford the Mountain Hawks an opportunity to simulate game conditions in a competitive atmosphere. Lehigh's most recent scrimmage last Saturday was utilized as the one "full contact" scrimmage of the spring segment. Saturday's Brown and White Game will operate at the "thud" level with no full tackling.

"I want the guys to be able to have some fun out there," Coen said. "We'll get a lot of reps for our young guys. I want to see those guys try and prove themselves.

"It's important that we get the guys into the stadium," Coen continued. "It gives them a little bit of energy. Guys have an opportunity to compete against each other and they get to bring some energy into the stadium. I'm looking forward to a productive game which will hopefully lead us into a good fall."

Saturday's event gets underway at 11 a.m. from Goodman Stadium and admission is free.
