BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a thrilling 13-12 last-second win at Columbia Saturday, graduate student Julianne D'Orazio has been named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week while sophomore Sondra Dickey has earned Midfielder of the Week recognition, as announced by the league on Monday. The honor marks Dickey's second in as many weeks. The Paoli, Pa. native filled up the stat sheet against the Lions, as did D'Orazio. Dickey scored the game-winning goal with 12 seconds remaining while D'Orazio posted four caused turnovers to eclipse 100 in her career.
The award marks the fourth of D'Orazio's career, also winning Defensive Player of the Week once in 2016 and Midfielder of the Week twice in 2017. A two-way player, D'Orazio played every rep on defense Saturday, helping spearhead a defensive effort which allowed just seven goals over the game's final 51:33. D'Orazio posted a game-high four caused turnovers while also adding five groundballs, five draw controls and four goals. Her goals gave Lehigh a 1-0 lead, pulled Lehigh within 6-5, evened the score at seven and gave Lehigh a 10-9 advantage.
D'Orazio reached both the 100 caused turnover and 100 draw control plateaus on Saturday. She is Lehigh's all-time career leader in caused turnovers (currently 102), and on Saturday, also moved into fourth place in Patriot League history in that category. D'Orazio entered the weekend third in the nation among active players in caused turnovers. For the season, D'Orazio is tied for the team lead in goals (9), is third in points (10), first in caused turnovers (8), second in draw controls (16) and tied for third in groundballs (9).
Dickey continued her strong play as well, tying career highs in goals (4) and points (5) while adding four groundballs, a caused turnover and five draw controls, tied for the team lead. Dickey's fourth goal was the game-winning goal with 12 seconds remaining, breaking a 12-12 tie and giving the Mountain Hawks a thrilling 13-12 victory, Lehigh's second straight one-goal thriller over Columbia. All four of Dickey's goals were in the second half to help the Mountain Hawks come back from a 7-5 halftime deficit. As a two-way midfielder, Dickey was part of a defense that allowed just seven goals over the game's final 51:33. For the year, Dickey is tied for the team lead in goals (9) and is second in points (12). She leads the team in draw controls (16) and is tied for the team lead in groundballs (10).
D'Orazio, Dickey and the Mountain Hawks remain home on Tuesday when they host No. 14 Princeton at 6:30 p.m. on the Patriot League Network. Princeton marks Lehigh's second straight nationally-ranked opponent at home; the last time the Mountain Hawks were home, they dropped a 14-13 heartbreaker to No. 12 Penn State in a game that came down to the final seconds. The Tigers are the second of three opponents Lehigh will face this season who reached the National Quarterfinals last May. Penn State and Navy are the others.
Most recently, Lehigh came back from an early 5-1 deficit at Columbia. The Mountain Hawks' defense stood tall down the stretch, allowing just seven goals over the final 51:33. Along with the performances from D'Orazio and Dickey, junior Courtney Henig tallied three goals and two assists to up her season point total to a team-leading 15 (seven goals, eight assists). Defensively, senior Alexis King caused two turnovers while classmate Kierstyn Voiro helped contain Columbia's leading returning scorer Victoria Kalmaras, holding her to just a goal and two assists. Saturday's win marked the 100th in head coach Jill Redfern's tenure as collegiate head coach (including her one season at Lafayette in 2000).
Princeton is 1-1 in the early going, earning a 17-4 win at Temple before dropping a 14-10 final to No. 16 Virginia. Freshman Kyla Sears leads the Tigers in assists (3) and points (9) while Kathryn Hallett has scored a team-leading seven goals. Tess D'Orsi also owns seven points behind six goals and an assist. Ellie McNulty leads the way in groundballs with 12 while Alex Argo has four groundballs and a team-leading six caused turnovers. Mary Kate McDonough has started both games in goal, recording a 9.81 goals against average and 0.452 save percentage. Princeton did graduate multiple significant players from last year's team, which reached the National Quarterfinals. Among the graduates were Olivia Hompe, who tallied 110 points last season (75 goals, 35 assists) along with goalkeeper Ellie DeGarmo, who posted a stellar 0.554 save percentage in 2017. This year, Princeton does return two players who eclipsed 50 points last season in Colby Chanenchuk (52 points: 14 goals, 38 assists) and D'Orsi (51 points: 38 goals, 13 assists).
Tuesday marks the first meeting between Lehigh and Princeton since 1993, a 21-3 Tigers' victory. Overall, Princeton leads the all-time series 11-5. The sides first met in 1978, a 4-3 Princeton win. Lehigh's first victory came in 1981, 13-10.
