
Pete Haffner named finalist for NFF Chapter Scholar-Athlete Award

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh freshman linebacker Pete Haffner has been named one of 35 finalists for the 2017 National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Chapter Scholar-Athlete Awards, as announced by the NFF on Wednesday. The awards will honor one student-athlete from each of five regions based on their accomplishments as athletes, scholars and citizens at the high school level.
All finalists are 2017 high school graduates who are currently playing college football. They had an average GPA of 4.1. Haffner is one of 13 finalists attending FCS Schools. Twelve finalists attend FBS schools while 10 attend Division II, III or NAIA schools or junior colleges. Haffner was nominated by the NFF Central Pennsylvania Chapter.
Haffner was a two-year All-State performer for State College Area High School in Pennsylvania, earning first team honors at the 6A level in 2016. He was also a two-time Defensive MVP in the Mid Penn Conference Commonwealth Division. In addition to his football prowess, Haffner was a three-year letter winner and team captain in wrestling and also lettered in lacrosse. Academically, Haffner was a high honor roll student who is currently enrolled in Lehigh's College of Business and Economics.
A national committee will select the five honorees, with the announcement set for Oct. 4.
The five NFF Chapter Scholar-Athletes will be honored during the NFF Chapter Awards Luncheon, presented by Under Armour, Dec. 5 at the New York Hilton Midtown. The 2017 season marks the 27th year of NFF Chapter Scholar-Athlete Awards.
Haffner and the Mountain Hawks will host Yale Saturday at Goodman Stadium with game time set for 12:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during business hours.
