BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On a surprisingly wet Saturday morning inside Goodman Stadium, the Lehigh football team closed out its spring practice segment with the annual Brown and White Spring Game. The Mountain Hawks ran approximately 70 plays under a modified scoring system with no live tackling.
The defense started fast in Saturday's scrimmage but the offense answered back in the second half, scoring four touchdowns. At the end of the scrimmage the offense, in white jerseys topped the defense, in brown, 48-34.
"I thought it was pretty good," Lehigh head coach Andy Coen said. "I wasn't happy at times, particularly early in the scrimmage. The defense was really dominating and I was looking for some spark that we could get things evened up. Throughout the spring you'd see the defense dominate the offense and vice versa so to me it shows that the guys are really competing against each other. We've got a long way to go. Every team in the country has a long way to go, but I'm pleased with where we're at right now."
(4/22/2017) 2017 Spring Game
Three quarterbacks saw action for Lehigh on Saturday, led by rising junior Brad Mayes, who completed 9-of-16 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Matt Timochenko was 6-of-9 for 78 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Senior Brendan Craven finished 4-of-10 for 13 yards.
The defense stopped the Mayes-led offense on its first two drives, while Timochenko's first series ended with an interception by junior cornerback Donavon Harris, who was credited with four tackles and a pass breakup in addition to the interception. Senior defensive lineman Tyler Cavenas had a couple would-be sacks in addition to a pass breakup, with the first of his sacks coming on third down with Mayes' second time leading the offense.
"We knew they'd be good and they really came to play today," Coen said of Lehigh's defensive front. "Hopefully that continues. We've continued to struggle at the linebacker position but I think we'll continue to grow with that. If we can have a great pass rush it's going to take a lot of pressure off of our defensive backs and also the linebackers."
Sophomore Alex Duke came up with Lehigh's second interception of the day, picking off a pass off a deflection.
The offense got into gear following a break for some 7-on-7 work. On the first play going in from the brown 35 yard line, Mayes connected with senior Gatlin Casey for the first touchdown of the day.
Mayes went back to work with a fresh set of downs from midfield and bounced back from a Harrison Kauffman sack to hit junior Cam Richardson for 17 yards to convert a third and long. On the next play, junior Dominick Bragalone raced 30 yards off the right side for the Mountain Hawks' lone rushing touchdown of the day.
After a couple of series with Craven under center, Mayes came back and led the offense on a 65 yard drive in seven plays, connecting with senior Troy Pelletier on a 14-yard touchdown on 4th-and-1.
"Brad did a really good job," Coen explained. "I was pleased to see him be as agile as he was. That wasn't something we expected. He was really a drop back guy. He's lost some weight and become more athletic and he's going to be able to do some things running the football for us too. I was pleased with him."
Mayes did rush seven times for 18 yards in Saturday's scrimmage.
Timochenko took over for Mayes at midfield and hit Richardson for 19 yards to convert a 3rd-and-14. Two plays later, he found sophomore Devon Bibbens wide open on the far sideline for a 34 yard catch-and-run, for the offense's fourth touchdown of the day.
The scrimmage concluded with a pair of two-minute drill situations. Mayes positioned Lehigh for a field goal attempt and sophomores Austin Henning and Oliver Clowes both connected on 38-yard attempts.
Bragalone paced the rushing attack with 56 yards on 12 carries. Richardson and Pelletier both had four receptions, with Richardson gaining 60 yards and Pelletier 47. Bibbens added 55 yards on three catches.
"Dom did a nice job," Coen said. "It's kind of hard when we're not tackling. Cam Richardson has also done a really nice job throughout the spring and did a really good job again today."
Lehigh's top tackler was junior Nick Thevanayagam, who recently moved from running back to safety and was credited with six stops.
Prior to the start of the Brown and White Game, Richardson was awarded the Jim Gum Scholarship Award, which is presented in memory of former Lehigh football player James S. Gum '84. Richardson, who has enjoyed a strong spring season with extra reps as a slot receiver in addition to leading the team in receiving on Saturday.
"Our process has to be to continue to work," Coen concluded. "We have to get guys back on campus so we can really start to get our team to come together. I'm looking forward to that."
The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up their spring segment with meetings and will then break for the summer before reconvening in August for the start of preseason camp. Lehigh will open the 2017 season at home against Villanova on Saturday, September 2.
