BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team is set to host rival Lafayette on Senior Day at Stabler Arena, presented by Yianni's Taverna. The Mountain Hawks and Leopards will meet for the 91st time on Saturday afternoon, with Lehigh holding a 46-44 record in the series. Lehigh hung on to win a 56-53 decision at the Kirby Sports Center back on January 21 to pick up its first Patriot League win of the year. Lafayette picked up its first league win on Feb. 8 at Holy Cross, and both of their wins this season have come on the road.
Lehigh put up its best field goal percentage of the season in their last game at Stabler Arena, shooting 52.1 percent in a win over Holy Cross last Saturday, but followed that with their lowest shooting night of the season (27.1 percent) in Wednesday's defeat at Navy. Freshman Cameryn Benz tied her career-high with 12 points at Navy and Paige Galiani scored a career-high six points off the bench.
Prior to Saturday's game, Lehigh will honor the three-members of its 2017 senior class - Kiernan McCloskey, Kari Moffat and Kayla Burton. To date, the trio have helped the team to 58 wins, three appearances in the Patriot League quarterfinals and an appearance in the 2015 Patriot League Championship Game. In the classroom, the group has compiled a 3.39 cumulative grade-point average.
IF LEHIGH BEATS LAFAYETTE
- Lehigh would sweep the Leopards for the second straight season, and for the third time in the last six seasons.
- Paired with a loss by Holy Cross, Lehigh would move into a tie for eighth place with the Crusaders.
ALL-TIME VS. LAFAYETTE
Lehigh and Lafayette will meet for the 91st time when the two rivals square off on Saturday at Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks own a 46-44 advantage in the all-time series since the Leopards claimed a 45-35 victory in the first-ever meeting in the 1974-75 season.
Lehigh is on a three-game winning streak over Lafayette after sweeping the Leopards last season, and taking the first matchup this season by three points. Lehigh's longest win streak over Lafayette is six games, which occurred twice (2001-03, 2008-10). The Leopards own the longest win streak of the series, winning eight-straight from the 1986-87 season to the 1988-89 season.
Since the turn of the century, Lehigh has taken victories in 29 of the 40 meetings with Lafayette, leaving the Leopards with just 11 wins during that span. Lehigh has also won eight of the last 11 meetings dating back to 2012.
Since opening her career with five-straight wins over Lafayette, head coach Sue Troyan has lead the Mountain Hawks to wins in 35 out of 50 meetings against the Leopards.
SCOUTING THE LEOPARDS
Both of the Leopards wins this season have come on the road. The team picked up its first Patriot League win of the season back on Feb. 8 at Holy Cross, 85-70. The win marked just the second time this year Lafayette scored over 70 points, and the first time they hit 70 in regulation. Since beating Holy Cross, the Leopards have dropped two straight, including a three-point home loss to second place Navy.
The Leopards are fourth in the Patriot League with 12.3 offensive rebounds per game, and have put up double-digit offensive boards in 19 games this season.
The Leopards have found much of their success on the offensive end this season in the second half. Through 26 games, the Leopards have scored 714 second-half points compared to 635 in the first.
Freshman Olivia Gumbs is coming off her second Patriot League Rookie of the Week honor after averaging 18 points and 10.5 rebounds in two games last week while shooting 55.6 percent from the field. She set career-highs of 25 point and 14 rebounds in the win over Holy Cross, and leads the Leopards in both categories this year with 9.0 points and 6.5 rebounds.
Three other Leopards are also averaging just over seven PPG this season, including junior Sammy Stipa (7.2 ppg) and Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby (7.1), who is also the team's top rebounder and shooter (45.5 percent). Anna Ptasinski chips in seven points per game and is tied with Stipa for the second-best three-point percentage on the team at 31 percent.
HOME COOKING
The Mountain Hawks boast a field goal percentage of 39.5 percent in 14 home games this season at Stabler Arena, but are shooting just 31.1 percent in their 11 road games. The trend is the same from three-point range, with the team shooting 35.7 percent at home (7.6 made 3FG/game), and 25.3 percent on the road (5.9 made 3FG/game).
ONE EXTREME TO ANOTHER
Lehigh had its worst shooting day of the season in Wednesday's loss at Navy, shooting just 27.1 percent overall, and tied for the fewest made field goals this season (16). This followed their Feb. 11 win over Holy Cross, where Lehigh shot a season-best 52.1 percent from the field, the first time they shot over 50 percent from the floor since Feb. 20, 2016 at Lafayette.
Lehigh shot an even 50 percent from three-point range in the game, marking the second highest percentage of the season and the fourth time they've made 10+ triples in a game this year.
TWO SCORING OVER 20
Quinci Mann scored 23 points and Gena Grundhoffer netted a career-high 20 in Lehigh's win over Holy Cross on Feb. 11, marking the first time since Nov. 25, 2015 that Lehigh had two players score 20+ points in the same game. In that game, Lexi Martins (23) and Kerry Kinek (22) led Lehigh past Saint Peter's.
GRUNDHOFFER MAKING STRIDES
Freshman Gena Grundhoffer has been a force for the Mountain Hawks over the last four games, scoring 11.8 points per contest and shooting 48.6 percent from the field. She is also 4-for-7 from beyond the arc and is collecting 3.8 rebounds per game in the last four games. She had the first 20-point game of her career last Saturday against Holy Cross.
BUHR CONTINUES TO BLOOM
Over the last eight games, freshman Camryn Buhr leads the Mountain Hawks with six rebounds per game and is third with 9.5 points. She is shooting 40.3 percent over that span, and leads the team with eight steals, is tied for the most blocks with five, and is second with 10 assists. For the season, she has crept up to second on the team with 4.4 boards per game.
MANN REMAINS IN THE TOP 20
Junior Quinci Mann ranks tied for 19th in the NCAA in free throw percentage at 87.4 percent, after first breaking into the top 20 last weekend. If the season were to end today, her percentage would be tied for seventh best in Patriot League history since the league began keeping track of the stat during the 2000-01 season.
Mann set a new program record for made free throws in a game by going 16-for-16 from the line on Feb. 1 against Loyola, surpassing the previous Lehigh record of 13, held by Alexa Williams (2009) and Kelly Madden (1995). The mark was 10 shy of the Patriot League record of 26 (in 26 attempts) held by Army's Kelsey Minato (2014).
Her 16 made free throws is the second most in a single game in the Patriot League this season, and tied for ninth most in a single game in the nation.
GETTING A BOOST ON THE BOARDS
The Mountain Hawks have now outrebounded their opponents in five of their last eight games overall, and own a rebounding margin of +1.1 during that stretch. Lehigh had previously been outrebounded in nine straight contests.
Lehigh ranks fourth in the Patriot League by collecting 37.8 rebounds per game, but comes in eighth/10 by allowing 40.8 boards per game. Overall, Lehigh's rebounding margin has been on the rise to -3.0 and is 7th in the PL. Lehigh has been outrebounded in 15 of its 25 games this season and holds a 2-13 record in those games.
BERN BABY BERN!
Over the last eight games, junior Bernadette Devaney is shooting 50 percent (13-for-26) from three point-range and 41.2 percent overall (14-for-34). In the two games against Navy and Lafayette on Jan. 18 and 21, she shot a sizzling 7-for-9 (77.8%) overall, including 7-for-8 (87.5%) from three point range. She averaged 11.5 points and two rebounds in 24.5 minutes over the two games. She currently ranks tied for sixth in the Patriot League in three-point percentage at 41.2 percent.
HEDSTROM'S HELPING HANDS
Over the last eight games, freshman point guard Hannah Hedstrom ranks second on the team with 5.8 rebounds and is dishing out 3.9 assists per game.
Hedstrom is currently tied for sixth in the Patriot League by averaging 3.4 assists per game, and is tied for fourth during league games with 3.9 assists per game. She is the only freshman ranked in the top 10 overall and is tied for the most assists in one game this season: nine against Delaware State on Nov. 16.
MANN INTO THE RECORD BOOKS
Quinci Mann became the 19th player in program history to reach the 1,000 career point mark on Feb. 8 at Bucknell. It was the first time a Lehigh player reached the 1,000 point plateau since Lexi Martins on Feb. 27, 2016. Mann is averaging 15.4 points per game this season, good enough for fourth in the Patriot League.
PATRIOT LEAGUE POINTS
Lehigh has seen a significant drop off in points scored since the start of Patriot League play. In their first 11 games of the season, Lehigh averaged 66.5 points per game and a -3.4 scoring margin, but has only 60.1 points and a -8.1 scoring margin in their 14 league games since. Lehigh ranks seventh in PPG in league games (60.1).
