PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Several decades have passed since a member of Lehigh's swimming and diving program last qualified for the United States Olympic Trials. The year 2016 marks the end of that stretch in a very big way.
Junior Jacob Moyar became the fourth member of the Mountain Hawks to punch their ticket to the Olympic Trials on Saturday with a 2:01.80 performance in the 200 meter butterfly at the Berkley Aquatic Club's Memorial Day Meet. Moyar joins teammates Jamal Willis, Justin White and Kaitlyn Ruffing, all of whom qualified for the 50 meter freestyle earlier this year, as the first Lehigh swimmers in over 40 years to qualify for the Olympic Trials. The trials serve as the qualifying event for the U.S. Olympic Swimming team which will represent the United States at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Moyar surpassed the Olympic Trial qualifying mark of 2:01.99 by nearly two-tenths of a second in the 200 fly senior/open prelims on Saturday morning. He took first place in the prelims over the other 42 competitors in the event, which also qualified him for Saturday's evening's finals. He then went on to win the event by taking the top spot in the 'A' finals with a time of 2:04.63.
"He worked hard, he wanted to make the cut, and he made the cut," head coach Rob Herb said. "Hard work plus desire, equals accomplishment."
On Sunday, Moyar also competed in the prelims of the 400 individual medley, finishing in 18th place overall with a time of 4:40.26, falling nearly 13 seconds shy of the Olympic trial qualifying time of 4:27.49.
Moyar, Willis, White and Ruffing will make the trip to Omaha, Nebraska on June 26 – July 3 for the U.S. Olympic Trials in an attempt to pursue a spot on the 2016 U.S. National team and compete in the 1026 Summer Olympic Games. Check back to Lehighsports.com for complete coverage and features leading up to the meet.
