Patriot League Release
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball senior Mike Garzillo, junior David Young and sophomore James Bleming have all earned spots on the Academic All-Patriot League team, as announced by the league Wednesday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks' three selections are a league best as the 12-player team recognizes strength in the classroom and on the field.
A day after being named the 2016 Patriot League Player of the Year and a unanimous first team All-League selection, Garzillo claims his third-straight Academic All-League honor, making him the first-ever Mountain Hawks to be a three-time Academic All-League member. Garzillo, who was drafted by the New York Yankees in 2015 but chose to return to Lehigh to finish his degree, holds a strong 3.39 cumulative grade point average as a Management major in Lehigh's College of Business and Economics. The Wind Gap, Pa. native was also recently named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District II team for his outstanding athletic and academic achievements. Garzillo wrapped up the regular season hitting .324 overall, including a .373 average in league play, with league-best marks in both slugging percentage (.559) and runs scored (48), in addition to his 33 RBI and seven home runs.
Young is a two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member who holds a 3.37 GPA as a Finance major. The first baseman's .355 batting average during Patriot League play ranked fifth in the league. Young wrapped up the regular season hitting .317 overall with 20 RBI, 14 doubles and 29 runs scored. In addition to his work in the classroom and on the field, Young is also a member of Student Athletes Leading Social Change. This is the first Academic All-League honor of Young's career.
Bleming has tallied a 3.44 GPA as a Business major. The centerfielder hit .319 in Patriot League play to help Lehigh lock up its third-straight trip to the Patriot League Tournament. Bleming finished the regular season hitting .311 overall with 28 RBI, four home runs and 31 runs scored. The Royersford, Pa. native has landed on Lehigh's Faculty Athletics Council with a semester GPA of 3.2 or above in all three of his completed semesters at Lehigh and earns his first Academic All-League award.
The Patriot League baseball academic awards are voted on by the league's sports information directors. To be eligible for this honor, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in his sport. Freshmen are not eligible for the award.
