BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a 9-5 win over Big Ten opponent Rutgers Tuesday, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team will host Army West Point on Saturday night at 7 p.m. Saturday will mark the first-ever between the two schools, coming in the Black Knights' first season as a Division I program. The Mountain Hawks will be vying for their 10th win in their last 11 games as they look to stay near the top of the Patriot League standings.
Lehigh's five seniors - Lauren Molina, Megan Paytas, Hannah Street, Nicole Isdaner and Kendall Garden - will be recognized prior to opening draw of their Senior Night Saturday.
The Mountain Hawks are currently tied for second in the league standings following last Saturday's big 8-7 comeback win at Boston University. Lehigh followed that up by beating Rutgers for a second straight season on Tuesday. The Mountain Hawks led the Scarlet Knights 8-2 at the end of the first half and were able to fend off a Rutgers rally to earn their ninth win of the season (compared to just two losses). Junior attacker Allison LaBeau tallied two goals and two assists in the contest as sophomore Haley Wentzel motored the offense with a hat trick and an assist of her own, just one goal and one point shy of tying career highs. Junior Julianne D'Orazio anchored the defense against Rutgers, causing two turnovers while tying a career high with two goals. Classmate Taylor Tvedt continued her strong play in goal, making nine saves. Lehigh's defense now stands No. 10 in the nation, allowing just 7.27 goals per game.
With her four points Tuesday, LaBeau reached a career-high 50 points on the season, this with five regular season games still remaining. She is also the first Mountain Hawk to reach 50 points since the 2011 season when three different players reached that plateau, led by 86 points from Lauren Dykstra.
The Black Knights are winless in the Patriot League so far, standing at 0-4 in league play and 5-7 overall. Their victories have come over nonleague opponents Central Connecticut State, LIU Brooklyn, UMass Lowell, Presbyterian and Howard. The team is currently on a three-game losing skid, dropping league contests to Bucknell, Holy Cross and most recently Navy last Saturday by a score of 11-5. Army's offense is led by the tandem of attacker Amy Johnston and midfielder Rachel Hornick. Johnston's 22 goals and 13 assists lead the team while Hornick's 19 scores and five assists both rank second among the Black Knights. Johnston also far and away leads the team in draw controls with 47, Kiersten Spencer leads the defense with 15 caused turnovers and goalkeeper Kayla Rowley owns a team-high 36 groundballs. Rowley has started each of the 12 games between the pipes, owning a 10.83 goals against average and.382 save percentage. A young Army team features 21 freshmen.
Following Saturday's contest, the Mountain Hawks will travel to Baltimore to face the Loyola Greyhounds on Saturday, Apr. 16 at 3 p.m. Lehigh returns home on Wednesday, Apr. 20 to host archrival Lafayette at 7 p.m.
