Freshmen lead Lehigh on opening day of fall-opening Colgate Invitational

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Freshmen carried the day for the Lehigh men's golf team on the opening day of the Colgate Invitational Saturday at Seven Oaks Golf Club. First-year players posted Lehigh's three lowest 36-hole scores on the day as the Mountain Hawks sit 11th out of 14 teams at 640 after rounds of 324 and 316.
 
In Saturday's morning round, Lehigh was led by freshman Johnny Hsu who shot 77. Hsu shot 76 in the afternoon and is the low Mountain Hawk after 36 holes, sitting in a tie for 12th place at 153. The freshman led the Mountain Hawks with 23 pars on the day.
 
In the afternoon, freshman Max Redetzke carded the low round of the day for Lehigh, a three over par 75. Redetzke bounced back from an opening round 85 to sit in a tie for 45th at 160.
 
Lehigh's second lowest player on the day was freshman Lee Hammerschmidt, who competed as an individual. Hammerschmidt is tied for 25th place at 157 after rounds of 78 and 79.
 
Of Lehigh's upperclass players, senior Dave Olexson led then way at 164 after rounds of 80 and 84. Olexson is tied for 60th place. One stroke behind Olexson is junior Brendan Worthy, who shot 83 and 82 and is tied for 64th place.
 
Sophomore Billy Johns carded one of just five eagles on the day and sits in a tie for 66th place at 167 (84-83).
 
Youngstown State leads the team race at 606 (309-297), three strokes ahead of Cornell.
 
Colgate's Ryan Allison holds the 36-hole individual lead at one over par 145 (73-72). He leads Bucknell's Connor O'Brien by one stroke.
 
The Colgate Invitational concludes Sunday with the final 18 holes of play beginning at 9 a.m. from Seven Oaks Golf Club.
