BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head coach Andy Coen has finalized his coaching staff for the 2015 season with the addition of Ryan Dougherty. A former standout punter at East Carolina, Dougherty will coach Lehigh's specialists (kickers, punters, snappers) while assisting with the Mountain Hawks' offense.
"I am excited to welcome Ryan Dougherty to our staff," Coen said. "Ryan can help develop our specialists in a way we haven't been able to do in the past. He will oversee all of our specialists and will have a lot of input in our kicking games. Ryan joins our staff after coaching at ECU where he was an outstanding player. I felt that we needed to have a member of our staff who could take ownership of an all-league punter in Austin Devine and also three freshmen who will play huge roles in our kicking game."
The former Pirate standout spent the last five years at his alma mater, first as a special teams assistant and then as a graduate assistant working with the special teams and offense from 2012-14. Among the student-athletes mentored by Dougherty are All-Conference USA punter Trent Tignor and kickers Warren Harvey and Michael Barbour, the former of who broke East Carolina's all-time scoring record. He also worked with several all-conference punt returners, including current NFL players Justin Hardy and Dwayne Harris. Hardy is also the FBS career leader in receptions.
At ECU, Dougherty held recruiting responsibilities for Alabama and Central Florida and assisted in all of the Pirates' recruiting operations. In practices, he worked with ECU's specialists and ran the special teams scout team. Dougherty also assisted with outside receivers in practice and helped run the scout team offense.
Off the field, Dougherty held weekly academic meetings with all specialists. At one point the top three grade point averages on the team were ECU's starting field goal kicker, punter and long snapper.
As a student-athlete at ECU, Dougherty was a four-time candidate for the Ray Guy Award and was a semifinalist for the award in 2006. An All-Conference USA selection, Dougherty holds the C-USA records for career punts (237) and punting yardage (10,112). Off the field, Dougherty earned honor roll recognition in his final three seasons, and earned the Athlete Scholar Award in 2006 along with the Jerry T. Brooks Academic Award.
Dougherty signed with the Green Bay Packers in 2007 and averaged 48.5 yards in preseason play before being released.
An instructor at the National Kicking service from 2004-09, Dougherty coached varsity and junior varsity football and soccer at his alma mater, William R. Boone High School in Orlando, Fla. He coached special teams from 2007-09 and also mentored wide receivers in his final season at Boone.
Dougherty received his Bachelors in Education from East Carolina in 2006 and completed his Master's of Education in health education from ECU in 2014.
