Garzillo named NCBWA District Player of the Year

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball junior Mike Garzillo has added another postseason award to his growing list of plaudits after being named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association District I Player of the Year, as announced by the NCBWA on Friday.
Garzillo is one of ten players across the country honored with a District Player of the Year award that honors the nation's top talent. District I includes all players from Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. The other nine District Players of the Year hail from Vanderbilt, Arkansas, UCLA, Maryland, Illinois, Oklahoma State, Nevada and Canisius.
Garzillo wrapped up his junior campaign hitting a team-best .359 with league-leading marks in RBI (54), home runs (13) and slugging percentage (.651). The second baseman's 13 long balls set a new single-season Lehigh record and his slugging percentage currently ranks 21st in the nation. He finished the season with 75 hits, the second most in a single season at Lehigh, trailing only former Mountain Hawk standout and current Colorado Rockies AAA player Matt McBride.
The NCBWA District Player of the Year adds on to Garzillo's postseason honors that include being named to the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional All-Tournament Team, the Patriot League Tournament MVP, a unanimous selection for first team All-Patriot League honors and an Academic All-Patriot League selection.
