Baseball America Release
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Newly drafted Lehigh baseball junior Mike Garzillo has been named a second team All-American by Baseball America, as announced by the publication Thursday. Garzillo, who was drafted by the New York Yankees Wednesday, becomes the first Lehigh player to be named a Baseball America All-American since Pat Hollander in 2000.
Garzillo joins players from LSU, Illinois, UCLA and Louisville, among others, as a second team All-American. The award adds to the long list of the second baseman's existing accolades that include NCBWA District I Player of the Year, ABCA/Rawlings East First Team All-Region, NCAA Baton Rouge Regional All-Tournament Team, Patriot League Tournament MVP, unanimous choice for first team All-Patriot League and Academic All-League honors.
Garzillo helped Lehigh to its second-ever Patriot League Championship this season after finishing his senior campaign with a .359 batting average and a league-best 54 RBI and .651 slugging percentage that ranks 22nd in Division I. He set a new Lehigh single-season home run record with 13 long balls and finished the season with 75 hits, the second most in a single season at Lehigh, trailing only former Mountain Hawk standout and current Colorado Rockies AAA player Matt McBride.
Garzillo was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 38th round of the MLB first-year player draft Wednesday evening.
