BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball's Mike Garzillo has been drafted in the 38th round (No. 1143 overall) by the New York Yankees in the MLB first-year player draft Wednesday evening. Garzillo becomes the second Mountain Hawk to be drafted in as many days after teammate Justin Pacchioli was selected by the San Diego Padres in the tenth round Tuesday, marking the first time in program history that Lehigh has had two players selected in the same year in the amateur draft.
"I couldn't be more grateful for this amazing opportunity given to me by the Yankees organization," said Garzillo. "It's something I've worked my entire life for and to see everything pay off this way is so exciting. It's something my family and I have been working towards for years and I'm so grateful."
A two-time first team All-Patriot League selection, including a unanimous first team pick in 2015, Garzillo quickly made his way into the Lehigh record books. Garzillo helped Lehigh to its second-ever Patriot League Championship this season after finishing his senior campaign with a .359 batting average and a league-best 54 RBI and .651 slugging percentage that ranks 22nd in Division I. He set a new Lehigh single-season home run record with 13 long balls and finished the season with 75 hits, the second most in a single season at Lehigh, trailing only former Mountain Hawk standout and current Colorado Rockies AAA player Matt McBride.
His standout season earned him numerous accolades including NCBWA District I Player of the Year honors and ABCA/Rawlings East First Team All-Region plaudits in addition to a spot on the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional All-Tournament Team and Patriot League Tournament MVP honors.
"We're so excited that Mike gets to have this opportunity," said head coach Sean Leary. "I'm thrilled for him because I know it's always been his dream to be drafted by the Yankees. All of his hard work has paid off and I couldn't be happier for him."
"Coach Leary and the entire coaching staff have been unbelievable to me and I can't thank them enough," said Garzillo. "They've all influenced my life in an extremely positive way and without them I wouldn't be where I am today."
Garzillo's impressive career numbers in the brown and white include a .317 career batting average, 173 hits, 103 RBI, 94 runs, 45 doubles, 13 home runs and 40 stolen bases.
