BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh men's basketball sophomore Tim Kempton picked up yet another postseason award on Thursday as he was named a third team ECAC All-Star. In total, 13 of the 19 honorees across the three teams were from power-conference schools, led by National Player of the Year Frank Kaminsky of Wisconsin who was named the ECAC Player of the Year. Kempton is Lehigh's first ECAC All-Star since C.J. McCollum in 2012.
Â
The Patriot League Player of the Year, Kempton was the only league player named an ECAC All-Star. Joining Kempton on the third team were Dez Wells of Maryland, Juwan Staten of West Virginia, Will Cummings of Temple, D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera of Georgetown, Justin Sears of Yale and Damon Lynn of NJIT.
Â
Kempton was also recently named an AP Honorable Mention All-American and garnered NABC first team All-District. Kempton and McCollum are the only Mountain Hawks to ever be named an ECAC All-Star; McCollum earned the honor twice (2010 and 2012).
Â
As a sophomore, Kempton led the team with 15.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game (sixth and first in the Patriot League, respectively). He played his best against top competition, averaging 15.7 points and 10.7 rebounds in three games against power conference schools, posting a double-double in each contest. In December, the Scottsdale, Arizona native tallied 16 points and 11 rebounds in a memorable homecoming game to Arizona State as the Mountain Hawks defeated the Sun Devils in triple overtime, 84-81.
Â
Kempton finished the season with 13 double-doubles to reach 19 for his career. Another highlight came against American and Holy Cross when he combined for 50 points and 26 rebounds to earn Patriot League Player of the Week honors. Kempton reached double-figure points in his final 20 games of the season.
The Mountain Hawks finished the season with a 16-14 record, finishing 10-8 in the Patriot League to earn the #3 seed in the league tournament. After a tough start, Lehigh made impressive strides as the season progressed, winning seven-of-eight games beginning in mid-January to jump near the top of the league standings. The Mountain Hawks defeated a pair of power conference programs in DePaul and Arizona State while finishing 3-3 against teams who made the NCAA Tournament and NIT. Lehigh returns its six leading scorers next season, including the reigning Patriot League Player and Rookie of the Year, as excitement around the program continues to rise.
