BETHLEHEM, Pa. - A pair of Lehigh men's basketball players have swept the Patriot League weekly awards as junior Austin Price was named Player of the Week and freshman Kyle Leufroy earned Rookie of the Week, announced Monday. The two helped the Mountain Hawks go 1-1 last week, beginning with a slim two-point loss at defending NEC Champion Robert Morris then bouncing back with a three-point win against NEC preseason favorite Mount St. Mary's.
Â
Price became Lehigh's first Patriot League Player of the Week since classmate Tim Kempton received the honor last Jan. 19. Leufroy received Rookie of the Week for the second time in the last three weeks after winning the award on Dec. 7.
Â
Lehigh's leading scorer against both Robert Morris and Mount St. Mary's, Price stepped up in the absence of Kempton, the Mountain Hawks' leading scorer and reigning Patriot League Player of the Year, who missed both games due to injury. Price began the week with 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting in a slim two-point loss at Robert Morris. He added four rebounds, four assists and a steal while not turning the ball over in 36 minutes. Twelve of Price's points came in the second half as the Mountain Hawks nearly erased a 10-point deficit midway through the stanza.
Â
Price added 19 more points against Mount St. Mary's; the Mountaineers had been 3-0 against the Patriot League entering Saturday. He scored 16 first-half points then his only second-half points came at the most opportune moment, knocking down a three-pointer with just 47 seconds remaining to give the Mountain Hawks a 74-73 advantage, on their way to the 76-73 win. For the season, Price is averaging 13.8 points (second on the team) and 3.0 rebounds per contest.
Â
Meanwhile, Leufroy continues to be a key contributor for the Mountain Hawks. He began at Robert Morris by scoring eight points in 24 minutes off the bench. Leufroy posted a career-high tying six rebounds, along with two assists and two steals (both career highs). The Pasadena, California native made his first-career start vs. Mount St. Mary's Saturday, scoring seven points while adding four rebounds, three assists and a steal. For the season, Leufroy is fifth on the team with 8.0 points per game while grabbing 3.9 rebounds per contest as well.
Â
The Mountain Hawks remain home on Tuesday to host preseason America East favorite Stony Brook at 7 p.m. Tuesday marks the final nonleague contest before the Patriot League opener on Dec. 30 at home against Army West Point.
