INDIANAPOLIS - Lehigh men's and women's basketball seniors Devon Carter and Elizabeth Sharlow have been nominated for the Allstate Insurance Company Good Works Team, as announced by the NABC and WBCA on Wednesday. In total, there were 257 total nominees for the prestigious honor, which shines a spotlight on a select group of student-athletes who have shown dedication to community service and altruism in their communities.
Â
In its fourth year, the Allstate NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams® recognize players at all levels of college basketball who have made outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement In total, there were 154 NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) nominees and 103 WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) nominees, which were submitted by sports information directors and college basketball coaches across the country.
Â
From the nominations, special voting panels, headlined by former Duke University basketball athlete, two-time NCAA® champion and seven-time NBA All-Star Grant Hill, and former University of Tennessee basketball athlete, NCAA champion and WNBA legend Tamika Catchings, will select two 10-member teams comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA Division I level and five student-athletes from Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The final roster of 20 award recipients will be unveiled in February.
Â
Carter has made his mark in the Lehigh community, most notably with his work on campus within his Psychology major. The Cleveland, Ohio native spent this past summer at Lehigh conducting two types of Psychology research. The first began last fall - analyzing time perception with Professor Gordon Moskowitz. The second research was with Professor Dominic Packer, focusing on the geography of bias. Some breakthroughs came out of the research as Professor Moskowitz's study was the first to show that time perception is affected by race.
Â
Along with Carter's Psychology research, he has also been actively involved in several community initiatives through Lehigh Athletics. Carter has participated in Reading Rocks, Adopt-A-Family and Student-Athletes Leading Social Change (SALSC) program. This past summer, a large contingent of student-athletes headed to Philadelphia, visiting Penrose Middle School in Philadelphia and helping rebuild their athletic fields by doing things like painting, pulling weeds and putting up fencing. There was also a leadership workshop for the middle school students.
Â
Meanwhile, Sharlow has been a driver in community service within the Lehigh Athletic department as a Student-Athlete Council Co-President, which is one of the highest honors for a Lehigh student-athlete. The purpose of the group is to enrich the student-athlete experience, with one branch being community service. Â
Â
Sharlow has been a co-captain of the annual Adopt-A-Family program, which features every Lehigh Athletics team "adopting" a family and provide a holiday season. The entire event includes raising funds, shopping for gifts, wrapping the gifts and the final event when everyone meets their families and provides the gifts. As an organizer, Sharlow met once a week for the whole semester planning and executing the event. She coordinated with teams, departments and fraternities/sororities, and led the planning with team leaders, department chairs, local school principals and local businesses. Lehigh Athletics ended up providing a Christmas to 50 local families last year, raising over $24,000 for the event.
Â
Reading Rocks is another program Sharlow is heavily involved in, featuring student-athletes reading to elementary school students every Wednesday. The program has been a success as evident by PSSA scores going up in the local schools since the program started. Sharlow is involved in several other community initiatives, including a hospital visit with her teammates around Christmas and school assemblies over winter break. Sharlow's love for community service is infection as she's served as the liaison between her team and Community Relations Coordinator Roseann Corsi.
Â
Since 2008, Allstate has partnered with the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) as a sponsor of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, which shines a spotlight on the positive, off-the-field impact college football student-athletes have on their communities.
