Women's Cross Country Competes at Princeton and Leopard Invitationals

PRINCETON, N.J. - In their final races before the Patriot League Championships, the Lehigh women's cross country team competed at two different venues on Saturday. Ten different Mountain Hawks saw action on Saturday, with seven of them taking to the course at the annual Princeton Invitational. At Princeton, Lehigh raced to a 16th place finish out of 24 teams, with all of its racers finishing the 6K course in an average time of 23:19. Penn, Guelph and Pittsburgh were awarded the top three spots, respectively, at the meet.
Sophomore Laura Barnes led the pack for the Mountain Hawks, crossing the finish line in 68th place overall with a time of 22:51.2. Senior Arielle Weiner (88th/23:12.4) and junior Marissa Karl (98th/23:17.8) both placed in the top 50 percent of the race, which had 206 finishers.
Junior Amanda Ruschel finished the race in 111th place overall in 23:33.3, nine spots and 10 seconds ahead of her teammate, freshman Stacie Nadel (23:43.3). Freshman Ashleigh Thurston also competed, finishing the race in 24:08.7, while sophomore Sarah Spring rounded out the squad's top seven with a 167th place time of 24:53.3.
Elsewhere on Saturday morning, Lehigh also sent three runners to compete in the Leopard Cross Country Invitational at Lafayette College. Sophomore Samantha Lerner led the way for Lehigh with a 34th place finish of 25:29.8. Junior Anne Birkenmaier and sophomore Jennifer Burke finished together with Birkenmaier placing 42nd and Burke coming in 43rd. Lehigh did not receive a team score for the event, in which Columbia University was awarded the top Division I spot out of five DI teams.
Up next, in two weeks Lehigh will join its fellow league schools at the Patriot League Championships on the campus of Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y. The action on October 31 is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
