Patriot League Release
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball junior Justin Pacchioli earned Patriot League Player of the Week honors while freshman Matt Kozemchak earned Rookie of the Week recognition, the league announced Monday. Both Mountain Hawks' performances helped Lehigh into the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and its first postseason appearance since 2010 as the Mountain Hawks won three of four games against rival Lafayette.
Pacchioli, Lehigh's leadoff hitter and centerfielder, finished the week hitting 13-for-24 (.542) with seven runs scored, a double, two RBI and seven stolen bases in six games. He batted .600 in Patriot League play as Lehigh took three of four from rival Lafayette and raised his batting average from .329 to .377 over the course of Lehigh's 5-1 week. Pacchioli recorded multiple hits and two runs scored in each of Lehigh's three wins over Lafayette. He played a part in three of Lehigh's four runs in a tight 4-2 win over the Leopards Saturday that clinched Lehigh's spot in the playoffs, scoring two of the runs while batting in the other. He stole three bases in both the second games on both Saturday and Sunday to accumulate an impressive weekly total of seven. This is the second Patriot League Player of the Week honor of Pacchioli's career and first for any Lehigh player this season.
Kozemchak shined in his first career Patriot League start Sunday in Lehigh's 5-1 win over the Leopards. The win secured the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament. The rookie fired 6.1 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and one walk as he extended his scores innings streak to 11.2. He tied his career high with five strikeouts and improved his record to 2-0 in just his third ever start. He is named Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the first time and is the first Mountain Hawk to earn the recognition since March 18, 2013 when Kevin Long earned the plaudits.
Senior Colin Gotzon also earned honorable mention recognition for the Pitcher of the Week award. Gotzon gave up two runs, only one of which was earned, and struck out nine in a complete-game effort in Lehigh's 7-2 series-opening win over Lafayette on Saturday.
The Mountain Hawks head to Army this evening to face the Black Knights in a make-up game at 6 p.m. The outcome will not affect tournament seeds, but Army can clinch a share of the regular-season title. Lehigh and Army face off in the semifinals of the Patriot League Championship on May 10-11 in West Point, N.Y.
