Patriot League Release | Souders Feature Story
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Continuing with excellence on and off the field, Lehigh senior defenseman Ty Souders has been named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team, as announced on Wednesday. The Macungie, Pennsylvania native owns a strong 3.54 cumulative GPA as a Finance major while on the field, he was recently named an All-Patriot League honoree for a third straight season.
Souders is one of just ten finalists in the nation for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Lehigh's lone captain this season, Souders has been a positive influence to all those around him.
In the classroom, Souders has been on the Dean's List several semesters and has been on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll while garnering the Faculty Athletics Council Award as well.
On the field, Souders is a three-time All-Patriot League honoree and two-time All-American (this season's All-Americans have yet to be announced). He is the anchor and quarterback of the Lehigh defense which stands second in the country allowing just 6.44 goals per game. Including Tuesday night's 10-6 Patriot League Quarterfinal victory over Navy, the Mountain Hawks have now allowed seven goals or fewer in eight of their last nine games.
Souders has helped transform the Lehigh defense which finished second in 2012 and sixth in 2013. This season, Souders has 38 groundballs and 13 caused turnovers, owning 133 groundballs and 55 caused turnovers for his career. Souders scooped a career-high six groundballs in a triple overtime thriller over Villanova in February.
The third-seeded and #18 nationally-ranked Mountain Hawks now look ahead to Friday's Patriot League Semifinal matchup against second-seeded and #14/15 Army Black Knights. Opening faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The winner advances to Sunday's championship game against the winner of fourth-seeded Colgate and top seed Loyola (which begins at 4:30). The title game is set for 1 p.m. All three games over the weekend will be hosted at Loyola's Ridley Athletic Complex and televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
