BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women's track and field freshman Courtney Avery has won her third Patriot League Rookie of the Week award, as announced by the league on Tuesday afternoon. Avery is just the fifth Patriot League student-athlete to ever win the award three times.
Avery set a new school record in the high jump for the second time in three weeks at the Armory Collegiate Invitational over the weekend, jumping 1.75 meters and surpassing the ECAC qualifying mark of 1.70m. The Wynantskill, N.Y. native finished third in the event against some of the toughest competition in the country and only placed behind jumpers from national powerhouses Arkansas and Arizona. She bested her previous record of 1.73 that was set in the dual meet against Lafayette two weeks ago.
Avery is the only ECAC qualifier in the high jump from the Patriot League this season, with the next-closest competitor hitting 1.65m, and she is just .01 meters away from entering into the top 50 marks in the NCAA this season.
Senior Jessica Kendzor earned honorable mention recognition for her impressive performances over the weekend. Kendzor set an ECAC qualifying and school-record time in the 500-meter run with a 1:14.57 at the Armory Collegiate Invitational, and also ran on an ECAC-qualifying distance medley relay (12:04.14) and school-record 4x400m relay (3:53.06).
The Mountain Hawks return to action Friday at the Bucknell Tune-up before headed back to Lewisburg for the Patriot League Championships a week later.
