Kinek scores 1,000th career point in 82-75 loss to Duquesne

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In a game that saw 18 lead changes and 13 ties, Duquesne was able to pull out an 82-75 victory over the Lehigh women's basketball team Sunday afternoon inside Stabler Arena. Junior Kerry Kinek scored the 1,000th point of her career in a 19-point performance to lead Lehigh offensively. Lehigh wraps up non-league play with an 8-2 record while Duquesne, a team that's made six-straight WNIT appearances, improves to 8-5.

"Duquesne is a very quality team and this was a good tune-up for us going into league play," said head coach Sue Troyan. "My biggest focus coming into this game was that we played with a high level of intensity and I think we did that. I was very proud of how the team competed today."

Kinek becomes just the 16th Mountain Hawk to record 1,000-plus career points. The Whitehall, Pa. native recorded her 500th career rebound earlier this season at NJIT on Nov. 21 and she is now the sixth-ever member of the 1,000 point/500 rebound club. Kinek is the first member to join the two elite clubs since Emily Gratch '12.

"I'm very proud of Kerry and she is always humble about her accomplishments," said Troyan. "Kerry always plays with a team-first attitude and never plays selfishly. Her humility and the way she shows up to practice every day ready to play makes her a great representative of Lehigh."

In addition to Kinek's team-best 19 points, sophomore Lexi Martins posted her seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and a career high-tying 14 rebounds. Martins also dished a team-best five assists. Freshman Quinci Mann was the third Mountain Hawk to finish in double figures with 11 points. Four other Lehigh players finished with six or more points.

Lehigh shot 50.9 percent (29-for-57) from the field and 55.9 percent (5-for-9) from three-point range. The Mountain Hawks converted 12 of 15 free throw attempts. Duquesne went 40.3 percent (29-for-72) from the floor and 10-for-18 (55.6 percent) from downtown. The Dukes held a 39-34 rebound advantage, including a 21-10 edge on the offensive glass. Duquesne's April Robinson registered a game-best 28 points behind an 8-for-9 showing from three-point range.

Duquesne scored the first two baskets of the game and quickly extended its advantage to 7-2. Lehigh responded with a 10-2 run that took five minutes off the clock and saw four points from senior Katie O'Reilly as the Mountain Hawks jumped ahead 12-9 with 13:46 to play.

The Dukes were able to tie the game at 15 two minutes later before using a 9-5 run to take a 24-20 lead with 7:50 to play in the opening term. A three-pointer from Mann was followed by a pair of Kinek free throws to put Lehigh back in the lead, 25-24, with 6:45 on the clock.

The Dukes jumped back on top 29-27 before a Martins layup ignited an 8-2 Lehigh streak to help the Mountain Hawks reclaim the lead at 35-31 with 4:17 left to play. The Dukes closed the half on a 6-0 run and held Lehigh scoreless for the final four minutes as Duquesne carried a 37-35 lead into the locker room.

A Mann layup started the second-half scoring and tied the game at 37. The Dukes were able to re-claim the lead but a pair of baskets from Kinek and a Martins jumper put Lehigh up 43-41 with 16:07 left on the clock. Eight points from Robinson powered a 12-7 Duquesne run over the next 3-plus minutes to give the Dukes a 53-50 lead heading into the under-12 media timeout.

Duquesne held onto a three-point lead at 55-52, but six points from Kinek tied the game at 58. A free throw with 9:13 left on the clock notched her 14th point of the game and 1,000th of her career. With Duquesne Leading 60-58, a layup from sophomore Kiernan McCloskey sparked a 10-2 Lehigh run that was capped off with a Martins layup as the clock wound down to 5:33 with Lehigh ahead 68-62.

The Dukes answered with 12 straight points and held Lehigh scoreless for over three minutes as a layup from Deva'Nyar Workman gave Duquesne a 74-68 advantage with 2:05 left to play. Martins drained a three-pointer to cut the lead to three, but a Dukes layup with 1:15 on the clock re-extended Duquesne's lead to 76-71.

With the score at 78-73 20 seconds later, Mann hit a jumper to cut the Duke lead to three at 78-75. Duquesne's Jose-Ann Johnson was able to toss in a layup with 17 seconds left on the clock before Lehigh missed its next attempt and the Dukes converted a pair of free throws. Duquesne walked off with an 82-75 win and handed Lehigh its second loss of the season.

The Mountain Hawks open Patriot League play Wednesday at Colgate. Tipoff for the New Year's Eve matchup is set for 2 p.m. and free video will be available on the Patriot League Network in addition to live audio coverage on 91.3 WLVR and wlvr.org.
