BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The fourth-seeded Lehigh men's soccer team will host fifth-seeded Bucknell in the Patriot League quarterfinals Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex. As the team prepares to make a championship run, sophomore Justin Worley and freshman Doyle Tuvesson were named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week and Patriot League Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday.
Tickets for Tuesday's contest will cost $5 for adults and $3 for students and those with a Lehigh ID. The Goodman Bus Service will depart the Dialogue Center on Taylor Street 45 and 15 minutes prior to game time to transport students to the game and return post-game.
Worley earned Defensive Player of the Week honors after anchoring the Mountain Hawk defense in Lehigh's 2-1 win at Holy Cross Saturday that secured a home playoff game. Worley made several key defensive stops as the Mountain Hawks held the Crusaders to just five shots on goal and Lehigh secured its first 10-plus win season since 2006. This is Worley's second Defensive Player of the Week award of the season.
Tuvesson earns his fourth Patriot League Rookie of the Week award after having a hand in both of Lehigh's goals in the Mountain Hawks' 2-1 win at Holy Cross. The freshman forward scored the game winner in the 17th minute after making crafty moves to work his way around the Holy Cross defense and send the ball to the far post past the hands of the Crusaders' keeper. He also assisted Lehigh's first goal by Ryan Bertrando in the seventh minute. Tuvesson is just the second Patriot League player to ever earn four Rookie of the Week awards. The only other player to accomplish the feat was Navy's Derek Vogel in 2012.
Worley, Tuvesson and the fourth-seeded Mountain Hawks will host the Patriot League quarterfinal matchup against fifth-seeded Bucknell Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Lehigh secured the No. 4 seed thanks to a 10-7-1 overall record and 5-3-1 league mark that was good for 16 points in the league standings. The Bison finished with 14 points behind a 4-3-2 Patriot League mark and 8-9-2 overall record.
Lehigh and Bucknell met in Lewisburg on Oct. 4 as the Mountain Hawks used a late rally to capture a 2-1 victory over the Bison. Lehigh trailed Bucknell 1-0 for nearly 70 minutes of the contest until Tuvesson scored an equalizer in the 73rd minute and a free kick from junior Jamie Luchini found the back of the net in the 89th minute. The all-time series between the two squads is even at 25-25-8.
The Mountain Hawks ride a five-game unbeaten streak into Tuesday's quarterfinal matchup. Lehigh hasn't lost since a 2-1 double-overtime loss at Loyola on Oct. 18. The Mountain Hawks are 5-2-1 at home this season. Luchini has led the squad offensively with 20 points behind six goals and a league-leading eight assists. Tuvesson follows with five goals and four assists, good for 14 points. A total of nine Mountain Hawks have scored goals this season. Senior keeper Ciaran Nugent has spent all but two games in net this season and has accumulated 61 saves to go along with a 1.21 GAA and .753 save percentage.
The Bison are coming off a 1-1 double-overtime draw against top-seeded Boston University Saturday. Jesse Klug scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season three minutes into the second half to help Bucknell earn a point in the league standings. The Bison are 5-4-1 when playing away from home this season. Klug leads the squad with 23 points behind nine goals and five assists. Jonathan Grad follows with six goals and five assists, good for 17 points. Clarke Fox and Mike Lansing have split time in goal for the Bison. Lansing has made 30 saves and tallied a .750 save percentage and 1.11 GAA, while Fox has stopped 29 shots to go along with his .763 save percentage and 0.86 GAA.
The quarterfinal winners will join Boston U. and defending champion Navy in the semifinal round with the host Terriers facing the lower-seeded quarterfinal winner and Navy squaring off against the higher-seeded quarterfinal winner. Semifinal winners will meet in the championship on Sunday, Nov. 16 for the Patriot League's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
