Traditions of Excellence: “Telling Our Leadership Story”

10/2/2014 11:41:00 AM | Student Athlete

Hi, Lehigh Fam!  We are Cassie Waggy, a senior on the softball team, and Madeline Walsh, a sophomore on the women's soccer team.  This year we are working with Julie Ammary, Program Director for Athletics Leadership Education, to "tell our story". Our goal is to highlight the John A. Cable Center for Athletics Leadership Development in a way that student-athletes, families, and fans will understand and enjoy.  We aim to share the success stories of our student-athlete leaders by featuring our in-season and upcoming-season sports teams.  As participants in the programs, we understand, first-hand, the importance of leadership knowledge and involvement among Lehigh's sports teams.  I, Cassie am a graduate of every level of the Leadership Academy and a two-time Student-Athlete Mentor (SAM).  I, Madeline am a current Emerging Leader and member of Student Athletes Leading Social Change (SALSC).  Below is a short list of Q&A's that can clarify some common questions, and highlight what we envision for the upcoming semester.  We hope that you find what we promote as Lehigh Athletics Leadership to be fun, informative and maybe even inspiring.

Q:  What is the John A. Cable Center for Athletics Leadership Development?

A:  The John A. Cable Center for Athletics Leadership Development was created in 2008 through the vision and generosity of alumnus John A. Cable '45 as an extension of Lehigh University's Office of Student Leadership Development. The vision of the center is to foster and inspire a culture of leadership within the Lehigh athletics community in which enhanced self-awareness, an authentic commitment to team goals, and congruence between values and actions all invigorate and complement a championship athletic experience. The Cable Center provides three main services:
  1. Leadership Education
  2. Leadership Involvement and Service
  3. Leadership Consulting

Q:  What is the Lehigh Athletics Leadership Academy?

A:  The Leadership Academy is the name for the Leadership Education programs offered through the Cable Center and includes the following initiatives:  Lehigh P.R.I.D.E. Spring, Emerging Leaders, Leadership Legacies, and LAUNCH.  Our education programs are comprehensive and developmentally incremental, teaching athletes (by year in school and mixed by sport) core leadership concepts and skills.

Q:  What can I expect to see from the "Traditions of Excellence" series?

A:  Spotlight interviews with our peers and coaches, both written and captured on video, Q&A's that highlight the "Five Pillars of Leadership" at Lehigh—Integrity, Competitiveness, Team First, Toughness, and Self-Awareness.  Through these articles we hope to feature and acknowledge effective leadership among individual and team sports, male and female athletes, and players and coaches.
