Mountain Hawks reflect on 2013 at annual banquet

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team reflected on its 2013 season with its annual banquet on Sunday January 12. The banquet consisted of a dinner, awards presentation and a season reflection by head coach Bob Bertucci.
The Athlete of the Year award was presented to senior Rachel Charles who claimed her third straight Patriot League Libero of the Year honor at the end of the season, while also garnering first team All-Patriot League recognition. The Farmington Hills, Mich. native finished her career as Lehigh's all-time career digs leader, tallying 1,693 throughout her four years in brown and white. She claimed the top spot in the record books on Sept. 7 when she recorded her 1,358th career dig against Wright State. Charles surpassed Sue Snyder '95 who previously led the way with 1,357 digs. Charles also finished this season ranked 15th in the nation in service aces per set, averaging 0.45 per set.
The Coaches Award, given to the student athlete who made noteworthy contributions to the team in the areas of attitude, improvement and leadership, was awarded to sophomore Amy Matula. After sharing setting duties last season, Matula stepped up to lead the team with 979 assists this season, while also tallying an impressive 220 digs,31 service aces, 30 total blocks and 74 kills. The sophomore was named Patriot League Player of the Week recognition following her stellar performances in wins against Army and Holy Cross.
The Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, representing the demonstration of the true meaning of the phrase student-athlete, was presented to junior Jade Van Streepen. The Austin, Texas native was strong on the court and in the classroom this season, garnering second team All-Patriot League recognition and a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League team. The environmental engineering major boasts an impressive 3.86 grade point average and was Lehigh's offensive leader throughout the season. Van Streepen tallied 291 kills and a 3.23 kills per set average that ranked fourth in the league. She also contributed 37 total blocks, 194 digs and 17 service aces.
The Mountain Hawks finished the season with a 20-9 record and made an appearance in the Patriot League Tournament for the third straight year. It marked the first time since 2002 that Lehigh has reached 20 wins in a season.
