Markham named Scholar-Athlete of the Year, two win Academic All-League

Patriot League Cross Country All-Academic Teams
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women's cross country sophomore Jennifer Markham was named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as announced by the league on Monday. Markham and graduate student Rosie Roessel were two of seven runners to be named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team. Lehigh was the only school to place more than one runner on the list.
A chemical engineering major from Lunenburg, Mass., Markham has tallied a 3.93 grade point average throughout her time at Lehigh. She secured a perfect 4.0 GPA during her first semester in Fall 2012, and has landed on the Dean's List for each of her two semesters.
Markham became Lehigh's first Patriot League Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year since 2006, and just the second in school history.
Markham impressed on the course as well this season after finishing fourth at the Patriot League Championships to be named first team All-Patriot League. The sophomore was Lehigh's top finisher at the race, as well as at the Penn State National two weeks prior. This is the first Patriot League academic honor for Markham.
Roessel was honored with a Patriot League academic award for the first time as a cross country runner, but the third time in her career. The Fairport, N.Y. native was a four-year starter for the Lehigh softball team before the start of her cross country career. Roessel tallied a 3.8 GPA in her mathematics undergraduate degree and is currently pursuing her master's in energy systems engineering in which she has accumulated a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Roessel was named to the softball Academic All-Patriot League team in 2012 and garnered the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2013 at the end of her senior season. She was also named a CoSIDA Academic All-American and has placed on the Dean's List for every semester of her Lehigh career.
The graduate student was one of Lehigh's most consistent finishers this season. She finished in eighth place at the Patriot League Championships to help Lehigh to its second place finish and be named second team All-Patriot League.
Markham, Roessel and the Mountain Hawks will return to action this Friday when they host the NCAA Division I Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship on the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. The women's race is set to start at 1:15 p.m.
