Patriot League Weekly Awards 10/28/13

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh volleyball sophomore Amy Matula has been named Patriot League Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday. The setter recorded 80 assists and a .600 hitting percentage this weekend to help Lehigh down Holy Cross in straight sets and upend first-place Army in 3-2 fashion.

Matula controlled the court this weekend and helped Lehigh capture its fourth consecutive win and second straight undefeated weekend. The sophomore tallied two career highs in Saturday's win over Army with her ten kills and 54 assists. The setter's previous career highs were five kills and 51 asissts. When Army began to catch onto the game of Lehigh's outside hitters, Matula stepped up and recorded sneaky kills of her own. She tallied 12 kills throughout the weekend, including ten in Saturday's win over Army, without making a single error to accumulate a .600 hitting percentage.

In addition to her strong setting and hitting, Matula also notched two timely service aces in Saturday's match. Her four total blocks and 13 digs on the weekend helped the Mountain Hawk defense as well.

The Mountain Hawks beat Army for the first time since Nov. 8, 2003 on Saturday during Lehigh's senior day. Prior to Saturday's win, Army had captured 21 straight matches over the Mountain Hawks. The win snapped Army's seven-game winning streak. Lehigh toppled Holy Cross in straight sets on Friday for the second time this season, which secured the Mountain Hawks' 12th straight win over the Crusaders.

This is the first time a Lehigh player has been named Patriot League Player of the Week since senior Amanda Clark was awarded the honor on Oct. 22, 2012. This is the first Patriot League award of Matula's career.

Matula and the Mountain Hawks resume action this weekend when they hit the road to take on Navy and Loyola.
