Lehigh has successful weekend at pair of meets

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team competed in a pair of meets over the weekend. One group went to the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the NYC Armory while the other stayed home as Lehigh hosted the 20th John Covert Classic. In both non-scoring meets, Lehigh had some great individual performances highlighted by freshman Adelou Adesida's first place in the high jump at the Classic.
At the Invitational, Senior Stephen Rumizen finished 10th in the high jump with a distance of 2.04m. Senior Evan Flach placed 18th in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:28.40 while sophomore Sam Bernitt finished in 25th (8:36.82) and freshman Simon Vorhees was 27th (8:41.63)
 
Sophomore Kenneth Wilkinson placed 23rd in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.91 and sophomore John Ciavardelli was 33rd in the 500-meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 1:06.82.

There was some incredible competition on the men's side including the top four teams in the nation in No. 1 Arkansas, No. 2 Florida, No. 3 LSU and No. 4 Texas.
 
At the Classic, Lehigh's bright spot came in the high jump where the Mountain Hawks took the top three spots. Freshman Adelou Adesida took first with a distance of 1.95m while senior Kyle Forrest took second and sophomore Patrick Ciez was third.
 
On the women's side at the NB Collegiate Invitational, freshman Savanna Plombon set a school record in the 3,000-meter as she finished tenth with a time of 9:55.83. The Frederick, Md. native surpassed the previous school record of 9:58.61 which was set by Jennifer Schappert in 2007. It is the third straight meet that the Mountain Hawks have broken a school record.
 
In the same meet, Lehigh set a school record in the in the distance medley as the team of sophomore Jessica Kendzor, junior Elizabeth McManus, junior Lauren Pietrosh and junior Julia Perry finished fifth with a time of 11:57.24, surpassing the previous school record of 11:58.71 which was set last year. The team's time also qualified them for ECACs.

Then in the 1,000-meter run, Kendzor finished in 11th place, crossing the finish line with at time of 2:53.38.
Senior Katherine Pierce finished seventh in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:03.44, just three seconds away from the 17:00.00 school record. Sophomore Katherine Howley also had a strong performance, placing 35th in the one mile run with a time of 5:14.46.
 
The prestigious New Balance Collegiate Invitational featured 100 colleges including seven of the Top 10 women's teams in the nation (No. 2 LSU, No. 3 Arkansas, No. 4 Clemson, No. 5 UCF, No. 6 Texas, No. 7 BYU and No. 8 Texas Tech.
 
At the Classic, the Lehigh women's team had a few first-place finishes. Junior Lauren Pietrosh won the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:19.53. Senior Catherine Tobiasen then won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.52 as she led five Mountain Hawks who placed in the top six spots. Junior Catherine Withers placed second by just 0.19 seconds.
 
Sophomore Jimil Ataman won the weight throw with a distance of 14.55m for her first victory of the season.
 
Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action Friday, February 10th as Lehigh travels to the NYC Armory for the Lafayette/Rider Invitational with action set to begin at 6 p.m.
