WEST POINT, N.Y. - A solid team effort led Lehigh women's track & field to a first-place finish at the Army six-team meet on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks won three events (the 1,000 meter run, 4X800 meter relay and weight throw) and racked up 142 points, ahead of Monmouth in second (120.5) and Patriot League power Amy in third (96.5).

“Beating a perennial league powerhouse in Army is always good,” said Lehigh head coach Matt Utesch. “We have a lot of respect for those guys, so to beat them is outstanding for us. I'm pleased with our performance; the girls were on their game. They showed up and got it done after a heavy week of practice.”

Columbia finished in fourth (77 points) followed by, Williams (59) and Rider (56). One of Lehigh's top events was the 1,000 meter run, which sophomore Jessica Kendzor won with a time of 2:57.06. The Mountain Hawks also placed second (junior Julia Perry), third (junior Brittany Pietrosh) and sixth (freshman Ingrid Simon) to gain 25 points from the event. Lehigh's outstanding balance from the 1,000 meter was indicative of the team's balance throughout the entire meet.

“We feel like we need to be solid in every event,” said Utesch. “We want to have depth in every depth. When we're not winning, we want to have multiple people scoring.”

Lehigh's team of senior Alexandra Neville, juniors Lauren and Brittany Pietrosh, and Perry garnered the squad's second first-place finish, winning the 4X800 meter relay with a time of 9:24.85, nearly 12 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Monmouth. Junior E'Lana Lemon continued her stellar season in the weight throw, with her distance of 16.63m leading the way.
In the 60 meter dash, junior Khaaleedah Smith finished second (8.03),followed by junior Kristin Slotnick and senior Alexandra Doersam tied for third (8.13). Doersam and Slotnick also impressed in the 200 meter dash, coming in second (26.28) and third (26.34), while Smith also gained a point by coming in sixth.

Another strong event was the 800 meter run as junior Kathleen Ryan finished second (2.19.36) and Neville placed third (2:20.23).

Senior Katherine Pierce finished third in the 3,000 meter run (10:13.09) to lead a pair of Mountain Hawks who earned points. One of Lehigh's top field events was 60 meter hurdles, as sophomores Jessica Ernst and Brooke Astor tied for third at 9.18. The Mountain Hawks also took fourth-to-sixth in the long jump, led by Doersam's fourth-place showing (5.07m).

“Being as competitive as we were with a Patriot League school (powerhouse) is always good for us,” said Utesch. “I'm happy with how we finished up as it bodes well for the rest of the season.”
