HISTORY
Construction/expansion of the A. Haigh Cundey Varsity House was completed in 2002 after being defined as a priority in the 1997-98 NCAA Certification Study. The space includes locker rooms for several programs including women’s lacrosse, softball, track and field and cross country, and renovated space for football, men’s lacrosse and baseball. Facility enhancements also included expanded sports medicine space, team meeting rooms and reception space, expanded areas for the equipment operation and a modern 5,000 square foot strength training center that is available to varsity athletes.
Upon completion of the 2002 renovation/expansion, the building was named in honor of the leading donor for the project, A. Haigh Cundey '55, who recognized the vital recruitment role a facility like this would play in attracting the best and brightest student-athletes to Lehigh. Other contributors included Paul Leitner '76, who made the first substantial commitment and for whom the Strength Training Center is named for. The final critical commitments came from visionary trustees Jim Tanenbaum '70, and former chair of the Lehigh Board of Trustees, and former board chair, Ron Ulrich '66.
In 2015, a 10,000 square foot expansion was completed and named the Smith Family Performance Center after the generous contributions from Dan Smith '71, Mark Yeager '81, numerous football alumni from the 1979 team and other generous supporters. This new space consists of four technologically-advanced team rooms/classrooms, retractable bleachers that seat 120 patrons, and 4,500 square feet of training/exercise rooms that are used by all sports.
The facility serves as the home for Lehigh's sports medicine, equipment services, and strength and conditioning.
